Meaning · English

Trijata, wise and devoted to Rama's feet, called them all and told her dream, saying: serve Sita, for your own good. A monkey burned Lanka and killed the whole demon army; Ravana rode an ass, naked, shorn, arms cut; Vibhishana ruled; Rama's call rang through the city, and Rama sent for Sita. It will come true in four days. Hearing her, they all grew afraid and bowed to Sita; having gathered, they scattered here and there. She brooded: a month passes, then he kills me.

Three Awadhi words carry this. Bibekā is discernment, the ability to tell what lasts from what does not. Tulsidas gives it to Trijata, a rakshasi, and ties it to rati, love, for Rama's feet. Sapanā is the dream she tells. Hoihi satya means it will come true. Shiva, telling Parvati, gives the dream in plain pictures. A monkey burns Lanka and the demon army dies. Ravana, naked and shaven, with his twenty arms cut, rides a donkey toward the south, the direction of Yama, death's lord. Vibhishana gets Lanka. Rama's name is proclaimed through the city, and then Rama sends for Sita. Trijata announces this openly and says it will come true in four days. The frightened rakshasis then bow at Sita's feet, the very women set to terrify her. Sita's own mind does not move as theirs did. She counts the month Ravana gave her, and she fears that when it ends the night-rover, whom she calls poca, base, will kill her. Tulsidas places the dream here to show that comfort and fear can sit in one place. The promise is spoken, and the one it is meant for is still waiting under the deadline. The poem lets her fear stand without hurrying to answer it.

A night-watchman walks the street calling that dawn is near, and the neighbours stop trembling and thank him. One woman by a cold window still counts the dark hours and listens for the first bird. The call is true, but until the light arrives it does not feel that way to her.
