Meaning · English

Sita begs Trijata: 'Mother, build a pyre and light it; I cannot bear this parting. Make my love true — words sharp as a thorn in the ear are unbearable.' Trijata, praising Rama's might, says night is no time for fire. Sita laments that fate has turned against her, the stars like embers yet none falling, and begs the Ashoka tree, its new leaves like fire, to give flame and end her body. Hanuman drops the ring; like an ember, she rises, takes it.

Sita speaks with folded hands. She calls Trijata her companion in sorrow, and asks for wood and a pyre (cita). Biraha, the ache of being parted from someone loved, has become more than she can carry. She also asks Trijata to make her love for Rama true, and says that words sharp as a spike in the ear are not worth hearing, meaning the threats around her. Trijata does not agree. She takes Sita's feet, calms her, tells of Rama's strength and good name, and says fire cannot be found at night. Then she goes home. Sita decides fate has turned against her, since no fire comes and no sorrow ends. The red stars look like embers, yet none falls to earth. She then speaks to the Ashoka tree. Asoka means without sorrow, so she asks it to live up to its name. She says its new red leaves are like flames, and asks it to give her fire. For Hanuman, watching from above, that moment lasts an age. The doha turns on one image. He drops the ring, and it falls like an ember from the tree. She rises gladly and takes it in her hand. The reciters' tradition reads this as the tree, in its own way, answering her plea.

In a long power cut, someone in the dark begs for any light at all and dreads the night will never end. A hand passes a small lit lamp through the window. She asked for a flame to end her pain, and was handed a different flame: the ring, a sign that Rama knows where she is.
