Meaning · English

Seeing the lovely ring marked with Rama's name, she starts, joy and grief tangled together. The monkey swears he is Rama's messenger and brought the ring. How did man and monkey meet? Hearing his loving words, trust rose: this is the Merciful One's servant.

Three words carry the passage. Mudrika is the signet ring, and here it is stamped with Rama's name. Sapatha is a sworn oath. Karunanidhana, and kripasindhu in the last line, mean a storehouse of compassion and an ocean of grace. Both are names for Rama. The story runs in steps. Sita recognizes the ring and is startled. Joy and biṣada, grief, rise in her at once. Then doubt comes. Who can defeat Rama, who is unconquerable? Yet no maya, no trickery, could make a ring like this. So she wonders whether it is a trap and thinks it over in many ways. Hanuman speaks gently and begins telling Rama's qualities. She listens and asks who told this nectar-like story to come forward. He steps closer and she turns away, amazed. Then he says plainly that he is Rama's messenger, he swears it by the compassionate Lord, and he gave her the ring himself. She asks how a man and a monkey became companions. He tells her. The doha gives Tulsidas's reason for her trust. The ring alone did not settle it. His loving words did. She judged him in mind, deed and word, and saw a servant of Rama.

A woman in a strange town hears a knock and a stranger says her brother sent him. She keeps the chain on the door. Then he speaks of her brother with such plain fondness that she slides the chain off. A token opens the question, and affection in the speaking settles it.
