Meaning · English
Sita, her love rising, weeps and asks if merciful Rama is well, why he has turned hard, whether he remembers her. Hanuman answers: Rama and Lakshman are well, grieving her grief, his love twice hers. His voice breaking, he offers Rama's message.
Three Awadhi words carry the passage. Kripalu means merciful, soft-hearted. Nithurai means hardness, the very thing Sita fears has crept into Rama. Duna means double. Sandesa means a message sent by someone far away. Sita's love swells once she knows Hanuman is Rama's servant. Her eyes fill and her hair stands on end. She calls Hanuman a boat for one drowning in the ocean of separation. Then come her questions. Is Rama well, with Lakshman? He is tender and kind, so why has he turned hard? Does he ever remember her? Will her eyes be cooled by seeing his dark, gentle form again? Words fail, tears come, and she says she has been utterly forgotten. Seeing her so lost in grief, Hanuman answers gently. The tradition's reciters hear her doubt as pain speaking, not accusation. He says Rama and Lakshman are well, and that Rama is sorrowful over her sorrow. She should not think her love is the smaller one. Rama's love for her, he says, is twice her own. This answers the question under all her questions: has she been forgotten? Hanuman gives her the news of Rama's well-being first, then asks her to steady her heart and hear the message. His own voice breaks and his eyes fill as he begins.
A child lost in a market finally meets a family friend. Her first question is not the way home but whether her mother has been looking for her. The friend says her mother has searched every lane and cried more than she has. Sita's questions and Hanuman's answer work the same way.
