Meaning · English

Rama's message, as Hanuman gives it: apart from you, Sita, everything has turned against me. New leaves look like flames, night like the night of destruction, the moon like the sun. Lotus groves are like forests of spears, and clouds seem to rain hot oil. What once comforted now pains, and the threefold breeze is like a serpent's breath. Telling it would ease the pain a little, but whom can I tell? No one knows it. The essence of the love between you and me, beloved, only my mind knows, and that mind stays always with you. Know from this alone how deep my love is. Hearing the Lord's message, Sita is lost in love and forgets her body. Hanuman then says: Mother, hold your heart steady and remember Rama, who gives joy to his servants. Bring his lordship to mind, hear my words, and give up fear. The demons are moths, Rama's arrow is fire. Mother, hold your heart steady, and know the demons already burning.

Hanuman is still repeating Rama's message to Sita. Rama says that since parting from her, everything has turned viparita, the opposite of what it was. Tender new leaves feel like fire. Night feels like kalanisa, the night of final dissolution. The moon scorches like the sun. The lotus groves feel like a forest of spears, clouds pour hot oil, and the threefold breeze, cool, gentle and fragrant, breathes like a serpent. The very things that once comforted now hurt. Rama adds that telling it eases the pain a little, but no one would grasp it. Only Sita knows the tatva, the essence, of their prema, love, because the two share one mind, and that mind stays with her. Rama says: know from this alone how deep my love is. Sita, hearing it, is lost in love and forgets her body. Hanuman then speaks for himself. He asks her to keep dhira, steadiness, and remember Rama, who gives joy to his servants. He asks her to bring Rama's prabhutai, his lordly power, to mind and let go of kadarai, cowardly fear. The doha gives the reason. The crowd of demons are patanga, moths, and Rama's arrow is krisanu, fire. Moths that fly at a flame burn up. Sita is told to hold her heart firm and see the demons as already burning.

A lamp is lit in a dark room, and moths swarm toward it, loud and many. They look frightening only until they reach the flame. The swarm is Ravana's demons, the lamp is Rama's arrow, and the swarm is already spiralling into it.
