Meaning · English
Rama calls for bow and arrow to dry the sea. Pleading with fools is seed on barren ground. He strings the bow; flame rises in the sea; creatures panic; it comes as a brahmin, pride dropped. Banana fruits when cut; the base yield to scolding.
Three words carry this passage. Bisikha is an arrow, and here a fierce one. Mamatā is the sense of 'mine', clinging to things as one's own. Birati is dispassion, the colour gone out of craving. Rama tells Lakshmana to bring the bow, for he will dry the sea. Then he gives his reasons as pairs. Humility spoken to a fool, friendship offered to the crooked, fine policy taught to a born miser, talk of wisdom to someone wrapped in 'mine', talk of dispassion to the greedy, and the tale of Hari told to the angry or the lustful: all of it, the text says, is seed thrown on barren soil. Nothing grows. This answers the question left by three days of waiting. Rama asked politely and got no reply, so he concludes that gentle words were wasted on this listener. Lakshmana likes the plan. Rama strings the bow and fits the arrow. Fire rises inside the sea, and its sea creatures, snakes and fish, panic as the water burns. Then the ocean appears as a brahmin, carrying a gold tray of jewels, and has dropped its pride. The closing couplet says it as a proverb. A banana plant bears fruit only when cut, however much one waters it. Tulsidas, speaking to Garuda, says the lowly give way to scolding, not to pleading.
A rusted jar lid that no gentle twisting will move. Hands fuss and coax for minutes, and it stays shut. One firm knock on the counter, and it turns freely. The ocean's refusal is the stuck lid, and the strung bow is the knock.
