Afraid, the Ocean clasps Rama's feet and asks pardon. Sky, air, fire, water, earth are dull by nature; brought forth by maya that Rama impels, for creation, as all the scriptures sing, each stays as ordered and is content. 'You did well to teach me; my bounds too were set by you. Drum, rustic, shudra, beast and woman are all fit for tadana. By your glory I would dry up and the army would cross, with no credit to me. Your command is inviolable, the scriptures sing; do at once whatever pleases you.' Smiling, Rama asks how.

The Ocean speaks, and he begins by admitting fault. He calls the five elements jada. The word means dull or inert, things that do not think and only follow their own nature. He says this of himself too: a body of water cannot bend to a plea the way a person can. Then he names the cause. Rama's power made these elements, and the order of the world is the Lord's ayasu, his command. Whatever is given a place is content to keep it, and that is the Ocean's whole defence. He praises Rama for the lesson, and says the marajada, his proper limit, was set by Rama himself. So his fixed nature, even his dullness, is Rama's ordinance. Then comes the line reciters most debate. The Ocean says that drum, rustic, shudra, beast and woman are all tadana ke adhikari. Many reciters read tadana as being guided and watched over. Others read it as being beaten. The Ocean speaks it in fear, about himself, and it is no instruction from Rama. Readers differ on what tadana means. The Ocean closes by yielding. Rama's glory will dry him up, and the army will cross without any credit to him. He will do at once whatever pleases Rama. The doha shows Rama hearing this humility and smiling.

A pot of water sits on a lit stove. The level sinks without any argument, simply because the flame is stronger. The Ocean's claim is the same: before Rama's power his own bulk and pride shrink, and the water that blocked the army gives way.
