Meaning · English
Hearing of his son's death, Lankesh was enraged and sent mighty Meghnad, saying, do not kill the monkey, bind him, and let me see where he comes from. Indrajit, unmatched warrior, rushed out. Hanuman uprooted a tree; they grappled like elephants. Meghnad aimed the Brahma weapon, and the monkey thought: if I defy it, its glory is lost.
The verse picks up straight after Akshaya's death. Ravana, called Lankesh, lord of Lanka, hears that his son is dead and is angry. He sends Meghnad, also called Indrajit, 'conqueror of Indra'. His order is odd: do not kill the monkey, bind him, so that Ravana can see what sort of creature this is. Meghnad is also angry, since Akshaya was his brother. Hanuman sees him come, tears up a huge tree, and Meghnad's chariot is smashed, so he is left without one (biratha). The warriors with Meghnad are crushed by Hanuman. Then the two fight hand to hand, likened to two royal elephants. Hanuman strikes with a fist, climbs the tree, and for a moment faints. Meghnad rises and tries many illusions (maya), but cannot beat the son of the wind, Prabhanjan's son. So he aims the Brahma weapon, brahma-astra. Hanuman thinks it over. Tulsidas gives his reasoning: if he does not honour the Brahma weapon, its boundless greatness (mahima) will be lost. The weapon is Brahma's, and Hanuman chooses to respect it. The tradition's reciters read this as a choice, not a defeat.
A strong swimmer sees a rope strung across a lane of the pool, set there by the lifeguard. He could duck under it easily, but he stops, because the rope is a rule others rely on. Hanuman likewise lets the weapon's honour stand, though he could resist it.
