Meaning · English
The Brahma weapon struck the monkey, though he honoured its force. Seeing him fall senseless, Indrajit bound him in the serpent noose and carried him off. Shiva tells Parvati: the Name frees the wise from rebirth's bonds, yet Rama's envoy lets himself be bound for Rama's work. Demons run to watch. Hanuman sees Ravana's court, unafraid among them.
The first verse finishes the fight. Indrajit's Brahma weapon strikes Hanuman, and Tulsidas says the third time the weapon came, an army had already been destroyed by him. Hanuman faints, so Indrajit ties him with nagapasa, the serpent noose, and takes him away. Then Shiva turns to Parvati, addressing her as Bhavani. He says that people who repeat Rama's name, japi, cut bhava-bandhana, the bonds of worldly rebirth, and become jnani, knowing ones. Could such a Name's messenger really be held by a rope? Shiva's answer: prabhu kaaraj, Rama's work, is why he allowed it. The binding is chosen, not suffered. Next, news of the capture draws demons, nisichar, who come to the court for kautuk, entertainment. Hanuman looks at Ravana's assembly. Tulsidas says its prabhutai, its grandeur, cannot be told. Gods and the guardians of the directions stand with joined palms, and everyone trembles at Ravana's frown. Hanuman feels no fear. He is like a garuda among a crowd of snakes. Then the doha: Ravana looks at him, laughs, and speaks a bad word, durbad. He remembers his son's death, and sorrow rises in his heart. The reader is given the teaching that a servant of Rama cannot be truly bound, and that power which frightens everyone else may leave him untouched.
A child who lets an older sibling pin him in a wrestling game, laughing, because he can stand up whenever he likes. The rope is the pin, Hanuman's calm is the child's ease, and the game is Rama's errand.
