Rama listened to the sage Agastya and was filled with wonder. "You say Lanka belonged to flesh-eaters long before Ravana," he said. "We were told the Rakshasas came from the line of Pulastya. Were these others stronger than Ravana and Kumbhakarna? Who was their forefather, and what wrong made Vishnu drive them out? Tell me everything." Agastya began at the very beginning. Brahma, born of the lotus, made the waters, and then he made beings to guard them. Hungry and thirsty, they asked him what they should do. He laughed and told them to guard the water. Some answered "Rakshama," and others "Yakshama," so the first became Rakshasas and the rest became Yakshas. From them came two brothers, Heti and Praheti. Praheti went to the forest as an ascetic. Heti married Bhaya, the fearsome sister of Kala.

Heti and Bhaya had a son, Vidyutkesa, who shone like the sun and grew like a lotus in water. When he came of age, Heti asked Sandhya for her daughter. Sandhya knew a daughter must be given away one day, so she agreed. Vidyutkesa delighted in his bride, Salakatankata, and in time she carried his child. She went to Mount Mandara and bore a son as dark as a rain cloud. Then, wanting only to be with her husband again, she left the baby there and went back to him. Abandoned by both his parents, the little one pushed his fist into his mouth and cried quietly. Just then Shiva was riding his bull through the sky with Parvati, and the two of them heard him weeping.

Parvati's heart went out to the child. At her wish Shiva made him as old as his mother, gave him immortality, and gave him the power to travel through the air. Parvati added a gift of her own: "From now on, Rakshasis will conceive in a day and give birth in a day, and in a day the child will grow to its mother's age." This boy was Sukesa. Proud of his boons, he roamed wherever he liked, like Indra after winning heaven. A Gandharva named Gramani saw that he was righteous and gave him his daughter Devavati, lovely as the goddess Sri. She rejoiced in her husband, and in time she bore him three sons, fierce as three fires: Malyavan, Sumali and Mali.

The brothers learned that their father's boons had come from the power of austerity, so they went to Mount Meru and practised penances so terrible that the three worlds shook. Brahma came with Indra and the gods around him and offered them boons. Trembling, their hands joined, they said, "Let us be unconquerable, immortal, lords of all, able to kill our enemies, and always loyal to one another." "So be it," said Brahma, and he left. At once they began tormenting gods and Asuras alike. Then they asked Viswakarma, architect of the gods, to build them a home. He said, "On the shore of the southern sea stands the mountain Trikuta. There I can build you Lanka, thirty yojanas wide and a hundred long, with golden walls and golden gates." So they settled in Lanka with thousands of followers.

A Gandharvi named Narmada gave the brothers her three daughters, the eldest first. Malyavan's wife Sundari bore Vajramusthi, Virupaksha and five more sons, and a daughter, Anala. Sumali's wife Ketumati, whom he loved more than his own life, bore Prahasta, Vikata, Dhumraksha and many others, along with Kaikasi and Kumbhinasi. Mali's sons were Anala, Nila and Sampati. With hundreds of sons behind them, the three brothers wrecked the sacrifices of sages and hounded the serpents, the Yakshas and Indra's gods. The frightened gods went to Shiva. "They call themselves Vishnu, Rudra, Yama, king of the gods," they said. "Take your terrible form and kill them." But Shiva felt it would be wrong to destroy them with his own hands. "I will not kill them," he said. "Go to Vishnu. He will."

So the gods bowed before Vishnu, who holds the conch, the discus and the mace. "Sukesa's sons sit in Lanka on Trikuta and hunt us from there," they said. "Cut off their heads with your discus and give them to Yama. We have no one else." Vishnu said, "I know Sukesa, swollen with Brahma's boon, and I know his sons, Malyavan the eldest. I will kill them. Take heart." Malyavan heard of this and warned his brothers. "Hari has promised to kill us. He killed Hiranyakasipu, Namuchi, Kalanemi, Sumbha and Nisumbha, and thousands more who had never lost a battle. Think what is wise." Sumali and Mali answered, "We have lived righteously, and we do not fear death. Vishnu has no quarrel with us. The gods have turned his mind, so we will take our revenge on the gods."

They marched out of Lanka toward heaven on chariots, elephants, horses, camels, serpents, crocodiles, lions and tigers. Terrible omens rose. Clouds rained bones and hot blood, the seas swept over the land, mountains shook, jackals laughed, and vultures breathing fire circled overhead. Already caught in Death's noose, the Rakshasas marched on, Malyavan and Sumali in front like blazing fires, Mali in command. Narayana put on armour bright as a thousand suns, took up his sword, conch, discus, mace and his bow Sarnga, and mounted Garuda. The wind of Garuda's wings sent their ranks reeling, but they closed around Vishnu and poured weapons onto him like rain onto a mountain. He drew Sarnga to its full stretch and cut them down by hundreds and by thousands. Then he blew his conch, Panchajanya.

At its roar the horses bolted, the elephants lost heart, and warriors toppled from their chariots. Vishnu's arrows severed necks, banners and bows, and the broken army turned for Lanka. Sumali stopped the rout. He hid Vishnu in arrows the way mist hides the sun, roaring until his men took heart again. Vishnu cut off the head of Sumali's charioteer, and the horses dragged Sumali aimlessly about the field. Then Mali charged. His arrows struck Vishnu, and Vishnu did not waver in the least. He shot back and brought down Mali's crown, banner, bow and horses. Mali leapt from his chariot, mace in hand, and struck Garuda on the forehead. In agony, Garuda turned and carried Vishnu away from the battle, and a great cheer went up from the Rakshasas.

Hearing that cheer, Vishnu, sitting twisted on Garuda's back, grew angry and hurled his discus at Mali. Blazing like the sun, it struck off Mali's head, which fell before his army pouring blood, as Rahu's head once fell. The gods shouted, "Well done, O god." Burning with grief, Sumali and Malyavan fled toward Lanka with their forces. Garuda recovered, turned back, and scattered them again with his wings. Cut by the discus, crushed by the mace, pierced by arrows, the Rakshasas dropped from the sky into the sea, until the earth looked strewn with fallen dark mountains. With Vishnu pressing behind him, Malyavan turned like the sea meeting its shore. "You know nothing of a warrior's law," he said, his eyes red. "You kill those who have stopped fighting. Fight me here."

Vishnu answered, "I promised the frightened gods I would destroy you root and branch, and I am keeping that promise. I would kill you even in the lowest worlds." Malyavan hurled a belled dart into Vishnu's chest. Vishnu pulled it out and threw it back, and it tore through Malyavan's armour. Malyavan fell senseless, recovered, struck Vishnu with an iron javelin, and struck Garuda too. Enraged, Garuda drove the Rakshasas off with his wings like dry leaves. Sumali, and then Malyavan in shame, fell back to Lanka. Unable to face Vishnu, they left Lanka with their wives to live in the nether worlds. "They were stronger than Ravana," Agastya told Rama, "and only Narayana could kill them. You are that Narayana." Sumali roamed the nether regions for a long time, and the lord of riches lived in Lanka.
