The story · English

Some time after, the Rakshasa named Sumali came up out of the nether regions and began to roam the earth. He was dark as a rain cloud, with earrings of burnished gold, and beside him walked his daughter, lovely as the goddess Sree herself, only without her lotus. As they wandered, Sumali looked up and saw the lord of riches passing overhead in his flying car, Pushpaka, on his way to visit his father, the son of Pulastya. That traveller shone like a god, bright as fire. Sumali stared in wonder, and then went back down into the nether regions. There he sat and thought hard. What could he do, he asked himself, to bring good fortune back to the Rakshasas? How could his people grow strong again?

At last he turned to his daughter, whose name was Kaikasi. "My daughter," he said, "the time has come to give you in marriage. Your youth is slipping past. No suitor has come for you, because every one of them fears being refused. Yet we want to do right by you, and we are trying our best. You have every grace, like Sree herself. Being the father of a daughter is a hard thing for anyone who cares about his name. You never know who will ask for her, and wherever she goes, three families hang on what becomes of her. So go yourself to Vishravas, son of Pulastya, born in the line of Prajapati, the best of ascetics, and choose him as your husband. Then, like this lord of riches, you will surely have sons as bright as the Sun."

Kaikasi heard him, and for her father's honour she went to the place where Vishravas was doing his penances, and stood there. He was in the middle of the evening fire offering, blazing like a fourth sacred fire himself. It was a fierce and unlucky hour, but Kaikasi did not think of that. She came before him and stood with her head bowed toward his feet, scratching at the ground with her big toe. The great ascetic looked at her, at her face as fair as the full moon, and spoke. "Gentle one, whose daughter are you? Where have you come from, what do you want, and for whose sake are you here? Tell me truly." Kaikasi joined her hands. "Sir, your own power can show you what I intend. But know that I came because my father sent me. My name is Kaikasi. The rest you can read for yourself."

Vishravas closed his eyes and looked inward. Then he said, "I know what is in your heart. You long for children. But you came to me at this fierce hour, so listen to the kind of children you will bear. They will be terrible Rakshasas, grim to look at, who delight in dreadful and cruel deeds." Kaikasi bowed low. "Sir, I do not want sons like that from you, a man who follows the Veda. Be kind to me." Vishravas answered her gently, the way the full moon speaks to his beloved star Rohini. "Fair one, the son you bear last will be true to my line. He will surely be righteous." In time Kaikasi gave birth. The child was a Rakshasa, terrible and hideous, with ten heads, great teeth, skin black as lamp soot, copper-coloured lips, twenty arms, huge faces and hair like flame.

At his birth, jackals with fire in their mouths and other wild beasts circled on the left. The sky rained blood, and the clouds gave out harsh sounds. The Sun lost his light, meteors fell to earth, the ground shook, and a violent wind tore across the land. The ocean, calm until then, rose up and heaved. His father, who was like his own grandfather Pulastya, gave him his name. "Since he was born with ten heads," he said, "he will be called the Ten-necked." After him came Kumbhakarna, so mighty that no one on earth was built on his scale. Then came a daughter with a frightful face, named Shurpanakha. Last of all was born the righteous Bibhishana, Kaikasi's youngest son. When he came, flowers fell from heaven, the kettle-drums of the gods sounded, and voices cried out, "Excellent, excellent."

The brothers grew up in that wide forest. Kumbhakarna, wild with hunger and never satisfied, roamed the three worlds devouring great and holy sages, while Bibhishana stayed home studying the Veda, eating little and holding his senses in check. One day Vaisravana, lord of riches, came again in Pushpaka to see their father. Kaikasi, burning inside, went to the Ten-necked one. "My son, look at your brother Vaisravana, wrapped in glory. You are his brother just as much, and look at you. So strive, my son, to be like him." Her words filled the Ten-necked one with bitter envy. "I promise you truly," he said, "I will equal my brother, or go beyond him. Put this sorrow out of your heart." Determined to win through penance, he went with his younger brother to the holy retreat of Gokarna. There they practised harsh austerities, until the great-father was pleased and granted him boons that would bring him victory.
