Meaning · English
Those learned in the three Vedas' rituals, who drink the soma juice and are cleansed of sin, worship me with sacrifices and ask for the road to heaven. They reach Indra's pious realm and enjoy the gods' celestial pleasures there.
Three words carry the verse. Trai-vidya means knowledge of the three Vedas, here the ritual part, the rules for fire offerings. Soma-pa means a soma drinker, someone who takes part in the sacred soma sacrifice. Yajna means sacrifice, an offering made by prescribed steps. Krishna tells Arjuna that people trained in this way do worship him, and the rites clear away their sins. But what they ask for is svar-gati, the path to heaven, the realm of Indra, king of the gods. They get it. Their merit takes them to a place of celestial enjoyment, richer than anything on earth. Krishna is not mocking them. He is describing what they chose, and the point is how small the request is. They came to the giver and asked only for his gifts. Shankara reads these ritualists as people who worship the gods without knowing Krishna as the Self, so their reward is limited. Ramanuja reads it as worship that does reach Krishna, yet is aimed only at heaven's pleasures. Madhva stresses that seeking heaven rather than the Supreme himself brings a lesser result. All three agree the fault is in what is wanted, not in the worship. The verse asks the listener to look at what he is really asking for when he prays.
A guest keeps visiting a generous host's house, always at dinner time. He eats well, thanks the cook, and leaves. He never asks the host a single question about himself. The guest is the ritualist, the dinner is heaven, and the host is Krishna, who is present but never really met.
1. Tonight, before a prayer or a quiet moment, ask yourself what you are hoping to get from it. Name it in one plain sentence. 2. Write that sentence on paper. Look at whether it is a thing, a result or an easing, or whether it is closeness to God. 3. Spend two minutes afterward with no request at all, only sitting in front of the lamp or image. Notice how this feels different from asking.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at two in the morning while his father is in surgery. He starts bargaining: if it goes well, I will fast every Monday for a year, I will give a thousand rupees at the temple. Krishna's words about people who worship for heaven describe this bargaining mood. The man is sincere, and the offering is real. Step by step, the verse would show him what the bargain is. First, he is dealing in trade: a gift on his side, an outcome on the other. Second, the outcome belongs to the surgeon, the body and time, and the vow does not control it. Third, he could keep the vow, but also sit with the one he is praying to, whatever happens. Ordinary experience bears this out: a mind busy with the exchange rate is not at rest. The verse does not promise the surgery will succeed, it does not take away fear, and it is no substitute for the surgeon. It speaks only to what he is asking for.
