Meaning · English
Without news of Sita, could they have eaten the honey-grove's fruit? So Sugriva mused as the band arrived. Told that Hanuman had done the work, he met them. Rama saw them coming, glad. They fell at his feet; he embraced them, asked their welfare.
Four Awadhi words carry this verse. Kusala is well-being, the plain question of whether all is well with someone. Kṛpā is grace, a kindness that is not earned. Karunā puñja, a heap of compassion, is the name Tulsidas gives Raghupati here. Pada kaṃja is the lotus foot, the way he speaks of Rama's feet. Sugriva, the monkey king, reasons that the monkeys would never have dared eat the honey-grove's fruit unless they had found news of Sita. Their boldness is his proof. When the band arrives, they bow to him and he greets them warmly. He asks how they are, and they say they are well because they have seen his feet. By Rama's grace, they say, the work has turned out especially well. They tell him Hanuman did the deed and saved the lives of all the monkeys. Sugriva hears this, meets Hanuman, and goes with them to Raghupati. Rama sees them coming and is glad, because he reads the success in their faces. The two brothers sit on a crystal rock. The monkeys fall at Rama's feet, and he embraces each one and asks after their welfare. Their answer, again, is that they are well now that they see his lotus feet. Tulsidas shows how success is spoken of. Each one credits the one above him: the deed to Hanuman, the result to Rama's grace. Welfare is measured by being in Rama's sight.
A child comes home after months away, and the mother at the door does not ask what he brought. She asks if he is well. He answers just by standing where she can see him, and her face settles. Rama's question and the monkeys' answer work the same way: welfare is being seen.
