Meaning · English
He roared a great roar; demon women heard and miscarried. His shout reached the monkeys, who rejoiced, felt newborn, and read Rama's task done in his glowing face. They ate Madhuvan's honey-fruit; keepers fled their fists, crying the grove was ruined. Sugriv heard, glad.
Three words carry the passage. Kilakila is the shout of a whole troop at once, here a joy-cry, and Hanuman's call across the water is the first news of success. Nutan janam means new birth. The monkeys had given Hanuman up for lost, and seeing him they feel they are born again. Madhubana is the honey grove, Sugriv's own, guarded by keepers. Tulsidas tells it as a story. Hanuman comes back over the sea and roars so loudly that the women of Lanka, hearing it, miscarry. The waiting monkeys know the roar. They crowd round him, glad as fish let back into water, and they read the result in his bright face and shining body: he has done Rama's work. They set off together to Raghunayak, Rama, asking and telling the fresh news on the way. Then they enter Madhuvan and, with Angad's consent, eat its honey-fruit. When the keepers forbid them, they strike the keepers with fists and the keepers run. The keepers complain to the prince that the grove is laid waste. Sugriv hears this and is glad, because he takes the reckless feasting as a sign that they have done Rama's work. Tulsidas asks nothing of the reader here. He lets the joy of a finished task show.
Picture a school team's bus pulling into the car park after a cup final. The waiting families recognise the horn before they see faces, and they run out. The noise itself is the news, and the winners are already half carried away by it.
