Meaning · English

Give me a token, Mother, as Raghunayaka gave me. She gave the crest-jewel; he took it gladly. "Lord, merciful to the lowly, keep your name and lift my heavy sorrow. A month, and I will not live." Comforted, he bowed and went to Rama.

Three words carry the passage. Cinhā is a token, a mark only the two of them would know. Cūḍāmani is the jewel worn on the crown of the head. Birada is a promise a person's name stands for. Hanuman asks Sita for a token, just as Rama gave him one, because Rama will need proof that he truly met her. She takes off the crest-jewel and gives it, and Hanuman receives it with joy. Then she gives a message. She calls Rama complete in every way, merciful to the lowly, and asks him to remember that and lift her heavy trouble. She tells Hanuman to remind Rama of the story of Indra's son and the arrow. She says that if Rama does not come within a month, she will not be found alive. She asks Hanuman how she could keep her life, then says that seeing him has cooled her heart, though the days and nights ahead are hers again. Tulsidas tells it this way so the reader sees that a message of trust is also a message of need. Hanuman first calms her in many ways, bows at her lotus feet and sets out for Rama. The passage asks nothing of the listener except to notice how a plea and a faith can sit in the same sentence.

A traveller leaving a lonely house is handed the key to a locked box, to show his family back home that he really was there. The jewel is that key. It is a small thing that vouches for a whole meeting, and it lets Rama believe what Hanuman reports.
