Meaning · English

Vast, he sprang from mansion to mansion; Lanka burned, its people reeling. "Who will save us? He was a god in monkey form." Scorn of a sage ends so. Only Vibhishana's house stood. He quenched his tail, shrank, and stood before Sita, hands joined.

Shiva is telling Parvati what happened next, so this is story first. Hanuman's body has grown huge, and he runs from rooftop to rooftop with great delight, carrying the fire on his tail. The city burns and the people lose their heads. They call for a mother and a father, and ask who can save them now. Then they recall what they had said, that this could be no mere monkey, but some god wearing a monkey's shape. Tulsidas then draws the lesson. Avajna means disrespect, the waving away of someone who deserves a hearing. Sadhu is a good and holy person. The poet says that scorning such a person ends like this: the city burns like a household with no anatha, no protector. Vibhishana had spoken for the messenger and for right conduct, and his house alone stays untouched. The poet adds that the fire's maker had sent his own messenger, and so the fire left him alone. Shiva names Parvati, Girija, as the listener here. Then the story turns. Hanuman overturns Lanka, leaps into the sea, and puts out his tail. He shakes off his tiredness, becomes laghu, small again, and stands before Sita with joined hands. The power was never for show, and he returns to service at once.

A man shouts down the one person in the house who warned about the wiring, then the lights fail and the smell of smoke rises. In the dark the room remembers that warning. Lanka's cries are the same: the warning was given and brushed aside, and it was only recalled when the fire arrived.
