Meaning · English
Ravana says: the tailless monkey will go back there, then the fool will bring his master; I shall see the might of those he praised so much. Hearing these words, Hanuman smiles inwardly, knowing Sarada has helped him. Hearing Ravana, the demons set about wrapping the tail. Lanka runs out of cloth, oil and ghee, and the tail grows. Townsfolk kick him and laugh; drums beat and all clap. They parade him through the city and then set the tail ablaze. Seeing it burn, he shrinks, climbs a golden tower, and the demon women are frightened. Urged by Hari, the forty-nine winds rise. He roars and grows to the sky.
Three words carry the passage. Pumchha is the tail, the very thing Ravana chose as the punishment. Laghurup is the small form, laghu meaning light or tiny. Hari-prerita means sent forth by Hari, that is, moved by Rama. Here is the story. Ravana taunts that the monkey should go back tailless, so the fool will fetch his master and Ravana can see the might of those he praised so much. The demons hear Ravana's order and set about wrapping the tail in cloth soaked in oil. Hanuman smiles at the words. Tulsidas has him say that Sarada, the goddess of speech, has come to his aid, and tradition reads this as Sarada moving Ravana's tongue, because Ravana's own mouth has just handed him the means of burning Lanka. The foolish demons then work at it. Hanuman makes the tail grow, so the city runs out of cloth, ghee and oil. The townspeople come for sport, kick him and laugh, and drums and clapping fill the streets. Then the fire is lit. Seeing it burn, Hanuman shrinks at once, slips free, and leaps onto a golden tower. The demon women are frightened. The last lines say why it works. The forty-nine winds rise suddenly, and Tulsidas says Hari sent them. Hanuman roars with a great laugh and swells until he touches the sky. Tulsidas is showing that the punishment was borrowed from Rama's plan. Ravana's cruelty and the crowd's mockery serve the one they mean to shame.
A boy lets a crowd tie a firecracker string to his kite tail, laughing at him. Then the wind picks up and the kite climbs over their heads. The mockers' own work lifts him, as Lanka's fire and the winds lift Hanuman.
