Meaning · English
Ravana laughs: a monkey has come to teach me, and death is near. Hanuman says the reverse will happen. Ravana orders him killed; Vibhishana pleads that a messenger must not be slain. Ravana: a monkey loves his tail, so wrap it in oil-soaked cloth, set fire.
Three Awadhi words carry the scene. Abhimani is the proud one, a man who thinks too well of himself to be taught. Niti is right conduct, the settled rule of how a king behaves. Duta is a messenger, who by that rule is not to be killed. Tulsidas says Hanuman's counsel was kind and full of devotion, discernment, detachment and right conduct. Ravana hears only an insult and laughs. He calls Hanuman a great learned guru and says death has come close to the one daring to teach him. Hanuman answers that it will turn out the other way. He says he can see the confusion in Ravana's mind. Ravana is stung and orders him killed. His demons run at Hanuman. Vibhishana arrives with his ministers, bows his head and pleads gently. Killing a messenger breaks niti, so give some other punishment. The court calls this good advice. Ravana laughs again and chooses a middle course. Maim the monkey and send him back. Then the doha gives the method. A monkey's tail is what he loves most, so wrap it in cloth, soak it in oil and set it alight. Tulsidas shows pride refusing counsel, and a cruel order taking a shape that will turn against its giver.
A man who has just been told his house wiring is faulty laughs at the electrician and orders him out. Then he props a lit candle against the same bad wiring to show he does not care. Ravana's pride does this: it dismisses the warning and then supplies the fire.
