The story · English
Krishna lived happily in the city of Dwarka, a place overflowing with every imaginable wealth and prosperity. The noble Vrishnis thronged it, and young women dressed in the finest clothes, radiant with youth, played with balls on its rooftops. The streets were always bustling, filled with golden chariots, horses, and majestic elephants. Dwarka was a city of lush gardens and flowering trees, where the air was filled with the songs of birds and the humming of bees. In this paradise, Krishna, the one beloved of sixteen thousand wives, took as many forms as there were wives and delighted in their grand, rich houses.
He delighted in the city's reservoirs and pools, where the water was fragrant with the pollen of blue lotuses, kumuda, and ambhoja flowers. While the birds chirped around him, Krishna played in the water, his body scented with saffron. Gandharvas sang of him as they joyfully played the veena, mridanga, and panava, while sutas, magadhas and bards sang his praises. The women of the palace played with him, squirting water at him with syringes while he squirted them back. Their clothes became damp and clung to them as they laughed and looked upon their beloved with longing, their faces glowing with joy as they enjoyed these playful games.
Krishna's queens were so consumed by their love for him that they became like those possessed. Thinking only of the lotus-eyed Krishna, they spoke to the birds and to nature as if mad, calling each one 'friend'. To the kurari they said, 'You too lie awake and cry.' To the chakravaki they lamented, 'Why do you weep so piteously? Have you, like us, come to servitude, longing to wear in your braid the garland honoured by Achyuta's feet?' They spoke to the ocean, the moon and the Malaya breeze, and told the cloud, dear to the Yadava lord, that it thought of him as they did and shed tears. By such absorption in Krishna, the queens reached the supreme goal.
Among his many wives, eight were most prominent, with Rukmini at their head. Krishna begot ten sons in each and every one of his wives. Among these sons were eighteen great warriors, including Pradyumna, Aniruddha, Diptiman, Bhanu, Samba, Madhu, Brihadbhanu, Chitrabhanu, Vrika, Aruna, Pushkara, Vedabahu, Shrutadeva, Sunandana, Chitrabahu, Virupa, Kavi, and Nyagrodha. Pradyumna, the son of Rukmini, married the daughter of Rukmi, Rukmini's brother, and their son Aniruddha married Rukmi's granddaughter. This lineage continued through Vajra, the one survivor of the club-fight, then Pratibahu, Subahu, and Shantasena, and finally to Shatasena, ensuring that no one in this noble line lacked wealth, children, or strength.
The Yadavas were so numerous that their count exceeds millions, and it is said that the clan had three crore and eighty-eight lakh teachers for its boys. The cruel Daityas slain in the war of gods and demons were reborn among humans and oppressed people, so Hari told the gods to take birth in the Yadu clan's hundred and one branches. By following Krishna, the Yadavas grew in power and prosperity. Their minds were so fixed on Krishna that while sleeping, sitting, and bathing, they did not notice their own selves. Those who hear and chant the stories of Mukunda attain the highest liberation, crossing the difficult ocean of death to reach his eternal abode.
