Who Is the Greatest?

The story · English
On the bank of the Sarasvati river, a company of sages sat through a long sacrifice. A question came up among them that none could settle: of the three great lords, which one is truly the greatest? To find out, they sent Bhrigu, a son of Brahma. Bhrigu went first to his father's court. He did not bow and he did not speak one word of praise, because he wanted to see what Brahma was made of. Brahma blazed with anger. But this was his own son, so the self-born creator put out his fury with his own understanding, the way water puts out the fire it was born from. Next Bhrigu went to Kailasa. Shiva was his brother, and he rose gladly to embrace him. Bhrigu drew back. 'You have left the proper path,' he said. Shiva's eyes burned, and he raised his trident to kill him.
The Goddess threw herself at Shiva's feet and calmed him with her words. Bhrigu went on to Vaikuntha, the home of Janardana. The Lord was lying at rest in the lap of Lakshmi. Bhrigu walked up to him and kicked him in the chest. The Lord rose, and Lakshmi rose with him. He stepped down from his bed and bowed his head to the sage. 'Welcome, brahmana. Sit on this seat for a moment. We did not know you had come, master, so please forgive us. The water that washes your feet makes even holy places holy. Purify me with it, and my world, and the guardians of the worlds who serve me. Today I have become Lakshmi's one true home. She will live on my chest, now that your foot has struck the sin from it.' Bhrigu could not speak. He was filled and satisfied, aching with devotion, and tears stood in his eyes.
Bhrigu went back to the sacrifice and told the sages everything, leaving nothing out. They listened in wonder, and their doubt was gone. Now they trusted that Vishnu was the greatest. From him come peace and fearlessness, dharma itself, knowledge joined with detachment, the eight great powers, and the glory that washes the mind clean. He is the final goal of sages who have laid down all force, who are calm, see all beings equally and own nothing. Goodness is the form he loves, and brahmanas are the gods he honours. Rakshasas, asuras and gods are all made by his Maya of three qualities, and of the three, goodness is the way to him. So the brahmanas of the Sarasvati served his lotus feet and reached him. This story is nectar, fragrant from the lotus mouth of the sage's son. A traveller who drinks it in through the cups of his ears again and again sheds the fear of worldly life, and the weariness of his long road falls away.
Once, in the city of Dvaraka, a brahmana's wife gave birth to a son. The baby touched the earth and died in that same moment. The brahmana lifted the tiny body, carried it to the gate of the king's palace and laid it down there. Then he wept aloud, sick with grief. 'My boy is dead because of this king's sins. He is a warrior in name only. He hates brahmanas, his mind is crooked, and he is greedy and lost in his pleasures. People who serve a king like that sink into poverty and live in endless misery, because he delights in violence, has no character and cannot rule his own senses.' His second child died the very same way, and then his third. Each time the brahmana laid the body at the king's gate and sang that same bitter lament.
When the ninth child died, Arjuna was staying with Keshava in Dvaraka, and he heard the lament. He went to the brahmana. 'Sir, is there no one here who can draw a bow? When brahmanas are left grieving for their wealth, their wives and their children, their kings are only actors in royal dress, living to fill their own bellies. I will protect your children. If I fail, I will walk into fire to burn away my sin.' 'Sankarshana could not save them,' said the brahmana, 'and neither could Vasudeva, or Pradyumna, finest of bowmen, or Aniruddha, whom no warrior can match. How can you do what the lords of the world could not? This is childish, and we do not believe you.' 'I am not Sankarshana,' said Arjuna, 'nor Krishna, nor Krishna's son. I am Arjuna, and my bow is the Gandiva. My strength once pleased three-eyed Tryambaka himself, so do not scorn it. I will beat Death in battle and bring your children back.'
The brahmana went home content, turning Arjuna's strength over in his mind. When his wife's time drew near, he came to Arjuna in fear. 'Save my child. Save him from Death.' Arjuna sipped pure water, bowed to Shiva, called his divine weapons to mind and strung the Gandiva. He sealed the birthing room with arrows charged with those weapons. He shot them across, above and below, until the room stood inside a cage of arrows. The child was born. He cried and cried again, and then, body and all, he vanished into the sky. With Krishna standing by, the brahmana turned on Arjuna. 'Look how foolish I was to trust a weakling's boasting. Pradyumna and Aniruddha could not save my child, and neither could Balarāma or Keshava. Who else could? Shame on Arjuna the liar. Shame on the bow of a man who praises himself, fool enough to think he could bring back what fate had taken.'
While the brahmana cursed him, Arjuna called on a secret power and went straight to Samyamani, the city where Yama, lord of death, lives. The child was not there. Weapon raised, he went on to the cities of Indra, Agni, Nirriti, Soma, Vayu and Varuna. He went down to Rasatala beneath the earth, up to the vault of heaven, and through every other realm. Nowhere could he find the brahmana's son. His promise was broken, so Arjuna made ready to enter the fire. Krishna stopped him. 'I will show you the brahmana's sons,' he said. 'Do not despise yourself. These same people who blame us now will one day make our good name shine.' Then the Lord took Arjuna up into his own divine chariot and set out toward the west.
They crossed the seven islands with their seven seas and the seven mountain ranges of each. They passed over Lokaloka, the mountain at the edge of the world, and rode into a vast darkness. There the four horses, Shaibya, Sugriva, Meghapushpa and Balahaka, lost their way and could go no further. When Krishna, the master of all masters of yoga, saw them falter, he sent his own discus ahead of them, blazing like a thousand suns. Sudarshana was swift as the mind. It plunged into that thick and terrible darkness and ripped it open with its fierce light, the way an arrow loosed from Rama's bow tears through an army. The chariot followed the discus down the path it had cut. Beyond the darkness lay a light without limit and without end. When Arjuna saw it, it stung his eyes so hard that he shut them both.
The chariot entered waters that a mighty wind had whipped into great rolling waves. In those waters stood a wondrous palace, brighter than anything, lit by thousands of shining pillars of gems. In it lay Ananta, the vast and wondrous serpent, white as a snowy mountain. His throats and tongues were dark, jewels blazed on his thousand hoods, and he had twice that many fearsome eyes. On his coils sat the all-pervading Lord, greatest of all great beings, dark as a heavy rain cloud and dressed in fine yellow silk. His face was calm and kind, and his eyes were long and lovely. Jewelled crowns and earrings lit his thousand locks of hair. He had eight long, graceful arms, the Kaustubha gem, the Shrivatsa mark on his chest and a garland of forest flowers. Krishna bowed to him, bowing to his own infinite self, and Arjuna bowed too, shaken by the sight.
The Lord of all creation smiled at the two of them standing with joined palms, and spoke in a deep, strong voice. 'I brought the brahmana's sons here because I longed to see you both. You went down to earth as parts of me, to protect dharma. Kill the demons who burden the earth, then hurry back to me. You are the sages Nara and Narayana. You want for nothing, yet keep to dharma, so that the world may follow you and hold together.' Krishna and Arjuna answered 'Om' and bowed. Then they took the brahmana's boys and rode home joyfully the way they had come. They gave the brahmana his sons, each in his own form and at his own age. Arjuna had seen Vishnu's own realm, and he was left in wonder. Whatever strength any man has, he now understood, is Krishna's mercy. Krishna showed many more such wonders. He enjoyed the life of the world and performed great sacrifices, and like Indra he rained blessings on his people in their season. Through Arjuna and others he struck down unrighteous kings, and through Yudhishthira, the son of Dharma, and others he set dharma on its course.
