King Parikshit asked a profound question: why are gods, demons and humans who worship the austere Shiva usually wealthy, while those who worship Hari, the husband of Lakshmi, are not? He wanted to understand the difference between the paths. In response, Suka explained that Shiva, joined with his power, manifests in three forms based on the gunas, and whoever worships any of them gains every kind of prosperity. Hari is the Nirguna, the supreme person beyond nature, the ultimate observer of all, and whoever worships him becomes free of the gunas. Suka added that the king's own grandfather, King Yudhishthira, after his horse sacrifices, had put this same question to Achyuta, and the Lord answered him with a lesson on the nature of wealth and attachment.
The Lord explained that when He chooses to favor someone, He may slowly take away their wealth. This causes the person's friends and family to abandon them in their misery. But when that person's efforts fail and they become weary and disillusioned by the struggle for material gain, and they make friends with His devotees, the Lord's true grace begins. This path leads to the realization of the supreme, subtle consciousness that ends the cycle of birth and death. However, many people avoid this difficult path and instead turn to those who are easily pleased, seeking quick rewards like kingdoms and power, forgetting the one who is harder to please but offers ultimate liberation.
To illustrate this, the story of Vrikasura is told. Vrikasura was a demon, the son of Shakuni. On the road he met Narada and asked him which of the three gods was quickly pleased. Narada sent him to Shiva, the Lord of the Mountains, who is easily pleased and equally quick to anger: once, pleased with Ravana and Bana, who praised him like court bards, Shiva gave them matchless power and then fell into great danger himself. Following this advice, Vrikasura went to Kedara and worshipped Shiva by offering his own flesh into the fire, which is Shiva's mouth. On the seventh day, dejected because the god had not appeared to him, he began cutting at his own head with an axe, his hair still soaked in the waters of that holy place.
Then the compassionate Shiva rose out of the fire like Agni himself. He seized Vrikasura's arms with his own two arms and stopped him, and at his touch the demon's body became whole again. Shiva told him, 'This is enough. Ask for any boon you desire. I am pleased even with water offered by those who take refuge in me; why torment yourself in vain?' Vrikasura, however, asked for a terrifying power: he wanted that anyone whose head he touched with his hand would die instantly. Shiva, though displeased, granted the wish. To test this power, Vrikasura immediately tried to place his hand on Shiva's own head. Terrified by his own creation, Shiva fled northward to the ends of the earth and sky. The chief gods, knowing no remedy, stayed silent, and at last Shiva reached the brilliant realm of Vaikuntha, where Narayana resides.
Narayana saw Shiva's distress and used his Maya to appear as a young brahmachari student with a belt, a deerskin, a staff and prayer beads, kusha grass in hand, blazing like fire. He greeted Vrikasura politely, inviting him to rest, and Vrikasura told him the whole story. The Lord said, 'I do not believe the words of Shiva, who became king of ghosts and goblins through Daksha's curse. If Shiva is truly the teacher of the world, prove it by placing your hand on your own head.' Confused and misled, Vrikasura placed his hand on his own head and died instantly. As flowers rained from heaven, the Lord told Shiva that the demon was destroyed by his own sin: what being who offends the great can be safe, let alone one who offends the master and teacher of the world? Suka concluded that whoever tells or hears how Hari rescued Shiva is freed from rebirth and from enemies.
