The sages said to Suta, disciple of Vyasa: You are blessed, and your life has borne its fruit, for you tell us the good story of Mahesvara. We have heard much already, and we have no doubt about it. But tell us this: by which vow is Shiva pleased, and gives lasting happiness? By which vow do devotees gain both enjoyment in this world and liberation? Suta answered: You have asked well. Remembering the lotus feet of Shiva, I will tell it as I heard it. Brahma asked Shiva this once, and so did Hari, and so did Shiva's own consort. They asked: by which vow are you pleased, so that you grant enjoyment and liberation? What Shiva answered will destroy the sins of those who listen.

Shiva said: I have many vows, but ten are the chief ones, which the knowers of the Jabala teaching call the ten Shaiva vows. They are to be kept with effort by the twice-born. On every eighth day, eat only at night. On the dark eighth, Hari, give up food altogether. On the bright eleventh, Vishnu, do not eat; on the dark eleventh, eat at night after worshipping me. On the thirteenth, eat at night, and on Mondays too, in both halves of the month. Feed Shaiva devotees at these vows, as far as you can. Those who abandon them are reborn as thieves. Four things lead to liberation: worship of Shiva, chanting of Rudra, fasting in a Shiva temple, and death in Varanasi. This is the ancient path.

Of all these, Shiva said, the vow of Shivaratri is the strongest, and so those who want enjoyment and liberation should keep it. There is nothing else that brings people more good. It is the best means of dharma for everyone: those with desires and those without, every class and stage of life, women and children, servants, even the gods. The night is the dark fourteenth of the month of Magha, taken when it covers midnight, and it destroys the sin of ten million killings. Shiva then told Hari the day's order. Rise early, full of joy, bathe, and go to a Shiva temple. Worship, bow, and state the resolve: Great God, blue-throated, I wish to keep your Shivaratri vow. By your power may it pass without obstacle, and may desire and the other enemies not trouble me.

Gather the offerings, and at night go to a well-known linga. Bathe again, put on clean clothes, sip water three times, and begin, with a mantra for every offering, and with song, music and dance. Keep watch through four watches of the night, making a new form of Shiva in each, with prayers and festival. In the first watch worship with the five substances, pour water over them, and offer sandalwood, unbroken rice, black sesame and flowers, naming him by eight names: Bhava, Sarva, Rudra, Pasupati, Ugra, Mahan, Bhima, Isana. Offer cooked food and fruit, and feed five Brahmins. In the second watch offer sesame, barley, lotuses, and bilva leaves, with milk-rice, and chant twice as much. In the third, wheat, and flowers of the arka plant, cakes, camphor light and pomegranate.

In the fourth watch use beans, millet, and mixed grains, with bilva leaves, sweet food, and bananas, and chant twice again. Keep the vigil with joy until dawn. At sunrise bathe, worship, and give gifts to Brahmins and ascetics. Then offer flowers and pray: I am yours, my life is in you. Whether through ignorance or knowledge, let this fast please you. In my family let worship of you never fail, and let no one be born where you are not God. Shiva said: whoever keeps this is never far from me. I can name no fruit too great, and nothing I will not give. Even if done without effort, it plants the seed of liberation. Keep it every month. I, Shiva, remover of sorrow, give enjoyment, liberation and every wish. Suta said: Vishnu heard this, went to his home, and kept the vow among people. Later Kesava told it to Narada.
