The story · English

The sages had listened to Suta, and they praised him, wishing good for the worlds. Then they said, "Suta, you know everything, so we ask you. Tell us the greatness of the Harishvara linga. We have heard that Vishnu once received the discus Sudarshana, and that he won it by worshipping Shiva. Tell us that story in particular." Suta answered, "Listen, best of sages, to the good tale of Harishvara, and how Vishnu received Sudarshana from Shankara long ago." At one time the demons grew very strong. They oppressed the worlds and ended the practice of dharma. The gods, tormented by those powerful demons, went to Vishnu, protector of the gods, and told him their suffering.

The gods said, "Be kind to us, Lord. The demons have crushed us badly. Where can we go, and what can we do? We have come to you for shelter." Hearing the grief in their words, Vishnu remembered the lotus feet of Shiva, and he spoke. "I will do what you ask, gods, by worshipping Girisha. These enemies are strong, and they must be defeated with great effort." The gods, told this by the mighty Vishnu, believed the wicked demons as good as dead, and each went back to his own home. Vishnu himself, to win victory for the immortals, turned to worship Shiva, lord of all the gods, witness of all, who never decays.

Vishnu went near Kailasa and began to practice austerity. He dug a fire pit and set the sacred fire before him. With earthen worship, with many kinds of mantras and many hymns, he served Girisha gladly, offering lotuses grown in the lake called Manasa. He fixed his seat there and did not stir. He resolved, "I will stay here, whatever happens, until Shiva is pleased." Yet Hara was not pleased. Vishnu began to think. He had served in many ways, and still the Lord had not been satisfied. Astonished, but full of the highest devotion, he praised the Supreme Lord with a thousand names, lovingly. With each name he spoke, he offered one lotus to Shambhu, who cares for those who come to him.

To test Vishnu's devotion, Shankara then took one lotus from the thousand. Vishnu did not notice it was gone. It was a marvel of Shiva's own power. When he realized the count was one short, he set out to find it. He wandered the whole earth, firm in his vow, for the sake of Shiva's pleasure. He could not find it. So Vishnu, pure of heart, offered one of his own eyes in its place. Seeing this, Shankara, who removes all sorrow, was pleased. He appeared there before him and said to Hari, "I am pleased with you, Hari. Ask for whatever you wish. I will give you what your heart desires. Nothing is beyond giving to you."

Hearing Shambhu's words, Keshava was glad at heart and full of joy. With joined palms he said to Shiva, "What can I say in front of you? You live within every heart. Still, I will speak, Lord, out of respect for your command. The whole world is troubled by demons, and we have no peace. My own weapon will not work to kill them. What can I do, and where can I go? I have no other protector. So I have come to you for refuge." Saying this, he bowed to Shiva, the Supreme Self, and stood before him, himself in great pain. Hearing Vishnu, Maheshvara, God of gods, gave him his own discus Sudarshana, a mass of radiance. With it Vishnu quickly killed all the strong demons, without effort. The world found peace, the gods were happy, and Hari was glad to hold his weapon. Then the sages asked, "What is that thousand-name hymn of Shiva, by which he was pleased and gave the discus? Tell us, with Shiva's own words, and the true measure of his kindness to Vishnu." Remembering Shiva's lotus feet, Suta began to speak.
