Suta said: Next comes the jyotirlinga called Ghushmesha, and listen well to its greatness, sages. In the south stands a fine mountain named Deva, wonderful to look at and always radiant. Near it lived a brahmin named Sudharma, born in the family of Bharadvaja, a knower of Brahman. His wife was Sudeha, devoted to Shiva, devoted to her husband, skilled in every household task. Sudharma honored the gods and his guests, kept the Vedic path, tended the fire, prayed at the three sunrise, noon and sunset hours, and taught his students. He was wealthy, generous, kind, and a lover of Shiva and Shiva's people. Yet many years passed in his righteous living, and no son was born. Because he understood the nature of things, he did not grieve. He thought, the self is its own rescuer and its own purifier.
Sudeha did grieve. Again and again she begged her husband to find some means to have a son. He scolded her gently. What will a son do? he asked. Who is mother, who is father, who is son, who is kin, who is dear? In the three worlds everything serves a person's own interest, there is no doubt of it. Understand this, he said, and do not mourn. Give up this sorrow, and do not bring it up to me again. So he quieted her and went on in contentment. One day Sudeha went to a neighbor's house to chat, and a quarrel started. The neighbor, a mother herself, taunted her in a woman's cruel way: You have no son, so why this pride? My son will enjoy my wealth. Who will enjoy yours? The king will surely take it. Shame on you, barren woman, shame on your wealth, shame on your pride.
Hurt, Sudeha came home and told her husband everything. Sudharma stayed calm. What is said is said, dear, he told her. What will be, will be. He comforted her many times, but she would not let go of her grief and pressed him. Somehow, by any means, you must father a son, she said, or I will give up my body. Pressed so hard, Sudharma remembered Shiva in his mind. He threw two flowers into the fire and silently decided that the right-hand flower was the one that would give a son. Then he told his wife: Choose one of these two, holding in mind that you will have a son. She bowed to Shiva and to the fire, and chose. But the flower she took was not the one he had chosen. Sudeha was deluded, and it was Shiva's will.
Seeing it, Sudharma sighed and remembered Shiva's lotus feet. What the Lord has made, how could it be otherwise? he said. Give up this hope, dear, and serve the Lord. He gave up hope himself and devoted himself to righteous work and meditation on Shankara. But Sudeha would not give up her wish for a child. With folded hands and bowed head she said to him lovingly: I have no son, but take another wife, by my command. She will surely bear you a son. He answered that now she agrees, but once the other wife has a child she will become jealous. Sudeha joined her hands again and said: I will not be jealous of my sister. She brought her own younger sister, Ghushma, to the house. Sudharma married her by the proper rites and asked Sudeha to look after her always, as a younger sister.
Sudeha served Ghushma like a maid, set aside all rivalry, and cared for her day and night. With her sister's leave, Ghushma made one hundred and one clay lingas each day. She worshipped them with the full rites and offerings, then cast them into a pond close by. So she worshipped Shiva daily, then called him back and sent him away again. When her worship had reached one hundred thousand lingas, it was complete, and by Shankara's grace a son was born to her, handsome, fortunate and full of good qualities. Sudharma was overjoyed and lived in contentment, unattached, devoted to knowledge and righteousness. But Sudeha grew fiercely jealous. At first her heart was cool toward the child, then it turned hard as a blade. What happened next was a cruel and painful deed. Suta said: listen to it with attention.
Seeing the younger wife's son, the elder wife was tormented. Everyone kept praising Ghushma for the boy, his looks and his goodness, and Sudeha could not bear it. Her heart burned like fire. When the boy grew up, Sudharma arranged his marriage, and the whole family honored Ghushma. Sudeha burned inwardly and cried, I am ruined. She thought: my fire will be quenched only by the tears from Ghushma's eyes. So today I will kill her pleasant-spoken son. Suta said: the mean-spirited do not weigh right from wrong. One night she took a knife, cut the boy as he slept beside his wife, and carried the pieces to the pond where Ghushma threw her lingas. She dropped them there and slept contentedly. In the morning Ghushma and Sudharma did their daily worship. The bride found the bed soaked in blood with pieces of a body on it. She wept and told her mother-in-law.
Sudeha cried out and pretended grief, but her heart was glad. Ghushma heard it and did not move from her vow of worship. Her husband, too, kept on until the rite was done. At midday, when it ended, she saw the terrible bed and still did not grieve. The one who gave him will protect him, she thought. Shambhu is dear to his devotees. She took her clay lingas, spoke Shiva's names, and went to the pond. As she turned back, her son stood on the bank. Mother, come, he said. I was dead and now I live, by your merit and Shankara's grace. Shiva appeared as light. He said, I am pleased, ask a boon. This wicked woman killed him, and I will kill her with my trident. Ghushma asked: protect my sister. Shiva said she did wrong. Ghushma answered that his sight burns away sin. Pleased, Shiva offered another boon. She asked him to stay there for the world's protection, under her name. He became the linga Ghushmesha, the pond became Shivalaya, and he promised her line one hundred and one generations of excellent sons. Sudharma, Ghushma and Sudeha circled him one hundred and one times, worshipped, and were at peace. Sudeha, ashamed, asked pardon and kept a vow to cleanse her sin. Whoever hears or reads this is freed from all sins, and gains enjoyment and liberation.
