Suta said to the sages: now I will tell you how the linga called Rameshvara came to be. Listen with care. Long ago Vishnu, dear to the good, came down to earth. In that life Sita, the daughter of Janaka, was carried off by Ravana, a master of deceit, and taken to his own home in Lanka. Rama went looking for her. He came to the city called Kishkindha, and there, acting for Sugriva's good, he killed Vali. He stayed some time, searching, and took counsel with Sugriva and the others, and with Lakshmana. Then the king's son sent monkeys out in the four directions, Hanuman at their head, to find her.
In time Rama learned from the chief of the monkeys that Sita had gone to Lanka. He received her crest jewel, and he was greatly glad. Then Rama, with Lakshmana and Sugriva, and with eighteen padmas of strong and holy monkeys, marched to the shore of the ocean. This was the salt sea that lies in the south. Rama, dear to Shiva, took his place on the shore, attended by the monkeys and by Lakshmana. He spoke aloud: "Alas, Janaki, where have you gone? When will I meet you again?" The sea was unfathomable. The monkey army could not cross it. The demon was strong, and Lanka was a fortress hard to reach, with Indrajit, Ravana's son, inside. He sat there thinking, and Angada and the other monkeys comforted him.
Meanwhile Rama, the best of Shiva's devotees, spoke kindly to his brother. "Brother Lakshmana, mighty one, I am thirsty and want water. Have some of the monkeys bring it quickly." Hearing this, the monkeys ran off in all ten directions. They brought water, bowed, and stood before him. "Master, take the water. We brought it at your command. It is excellent, sweet, cool, and refreshing." Rama looked on them with grace, very pleased, and took the water himself. But as he began to drink, by Shiva's will a thought came to him: "I have not seen Shambhu. How can I take water first? He is my lord, the highest, the giver of all joy." So saying, he drank. Afterward the son of Raghu made an earthen linga and worshipped it.
He set out the sixteen offerings, beginning with the invitation, and worshipped Shankara with love and by the rule. With bows and fine hymns he pleased Shiva, and prayed gladly and with true devotion. Rama said: "Lord Shambhu, Mahadeva, always kind to your devotees, protect me. I have come to you for shelter, and I am your servant, troubled in mind. This sea is unfathomable. Ravana is a great warrior, a demon, very strong. The monkeys' strength is shaky for a war. How will my task succeed, so that I win back my beloved? Help me, Lord. Without your help it is hard to do. Ravana is yours, too, hard for anyone to beat, proud of the boons you gave him, conqueror of the three worlds. Yet I am your servant, wholly under you. Remember that, Sadashiva, and take my side."
Suta continued. Rama bowed again and again and cried out, "Victory, victory, Shankara." Absorbed in mantra and meditation, he worshipped once more and danced before the Lord. Loving, his heart melted, and his voice broke. Then Shankara was well pleased. Mahesvara, in the form of light, with his attendants, took his spotless form and appeared at once. Glad at Rama's devotion, he said, "May it be well. Rama, ask a boon." Seeing that form, all were made pure. Rama worshipped again, praised him, bowed, and asked for victory over Ravana in battle. Shiva said, "Victory to you, great king." Then Rama, hands joined, asked, "Stay here, Lord, to purify the worlds and help others." Shiva became a linga there, famed on earth as Rameshvara. By its power Rama crossed the sea with ease, killed Ravana and the other demons, and won his beloved. Rameshvara's greatness is boundless, granting enjoyment and liberation. Whoever bathes Shiva as Rameshvara with Ganges water, in true devotion, is freed while living, enjoys pleasures even gods rarely reach, and at the end gains kaivalya. This jyotirlinga, Suta says, destroys the sins of those who hear of it.
