One day a servant of the wicked demon king Daruka saw, before the captive merchant, a beautiful form of Shankara. Astonished, he went and told the king everything he had seen, every strange detail of it. Daruka came there himself, shaken, with his demon troops behind him, and questioned the merchant, who was devoted to Shiva. "What are you meditating on? Tell me the truth, here in front of me. Do that, and you will not die. My word does not change." The merchant answered that he did not know. Hearing it, Daruka flew into a rage and ordered his demons: "Kill him."
The demons ran at the best of merchants, each carrying weapons of every kind. He was fixed on Shankara in his heart. Seeing them come, his eyes wide with fear, he remembered Shiva with love and called out his names again and again. "Protect me, Shankara, lord of the gods. Protect me, Shambhu, Shiva. Save me from this wicked one, lord of the three worlds, destroyer of the wicked, kind to those who love you. You are everything I have, God, today. I belong to you and depend on you. You are my very breath, always." Prayed to in this way, Shambhu came out from a opening in the earth, and with him came a splendid dwelling with four doors.
In the middle of it shone a light, and that light was Shiva's own form, astonishing to see, with his attendants around him. The merchant saw him and worshipped him. Shambhu, worshipped, became pleased. He gave the merchant the weapon called Pashupata, and then he struck down the chief demons quickly, with all their gear and all their troops. So Shankara, destroyer of the wicked, protected his devotee. Then he gave a boon over the forest: the duties of the four castes would always flourish there, among Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. Nothing of darkness would ever rule it, and those who taught and practiced the way of Shiva would live there. Meanwhile the demoness Daruka, sunk in sorrow, prayed to the goddess Parvati.
Parvati was pleased and asked, "What shall I do?" Daruka answered, "Let my family line be protected by you." Parvati said, "I will protect your line. I say it truly." Then she took up the matter with Shiva himself. Seeing her angry, Shiva, bound by his boon, said gently, "Do as you wish." Parvati smiled and answered: "Your word will come true at the end of the age. Until then, let creation touched by darkness continue. Otherwise there would be dissolution. This Daruka is my own power, strongest of the demonesses. Let her rule the demon kingdom. Let these demon wives bear sons, and let them all live in the forest." Shankara, pleased, replied: "I will stay in this forest with love, to protect my devotees."
"Whoever follows his duty and comes here to see me with love will become a universal emperor. In the first age of a later cycle, Mahasena's son Virasena will come, mighty in devotion, and see me, and become an emperor." The divine pair, laughing together, stayed there: Shiva as the light-linga called Nageshvara, and Shiva's goddess as Nageshvari. The sages asked how Virasena would get there. Suta told them: Virasena was a Kshatriya of Nishadha who loved Shiva. He worshipped an earthen linga and practiced hard austerity for twelve years. Shankara appeared and promised him a wooden fish coated with tin, made magical, to enter with his men. Shiva vanished, and Virasena was made able. Whoever hears this tale of Nageshvara's rise with devotion obtains all his desires, and the great sins are destroyed.
