The story · English

Suta told it like this. Ravana, best of the rakshasas, proud and careful of his pride, worshipped Shiva with devotion on Kailasa, the finest of mountains. After a long while Shiva was still not pleased, so Ravana began a different austerity, to win a shrine for Shiva. In the south, in a grove below the Himalaya, he dug a pit, set a fire in it, set a Shiva linga beside it, and made offerings. He sat among five fires in summer, slept on bare ground in the rains, and stood in water in winter. Still Shiva did not come. Then Ravana began to cut off his own heads, one at a time, as an offering. Nine were cut. As he began the tenth, Shiva appeared there, pleased. He made the heads whole and healthy again, and gave Ravana the boon he wanted, matchless strength.

Ravana bowed with folded hands and said, "Be gracious, Lord of the gods. I want to take you to Lanka. Make my wish come true. I have come to you for shelter." Shiva was bewildered and in great difficulty. He answered, "Listen, best of rakshasas. Carry this excellent linga to your home with true devotion. But wherever you set it on the ground, it will stay there. Do as you wish." Ravana agreed and set off with it. On the road, by Shiva's own illusion, he needed to relieve himself and could not hold it back. He saw a cowherd, begged him, and handed him the linga. When a short while had passed, the cowherd grew weary, and the weight crushed him. He set it on the ground, and there it stayed.

That linga, hard as diamond, became Vaidyanatha, the giver of every wish. The sight of it removes sin, and it grants both enjoyment and release. The gods learned what had happened, and Vishnu, Brahma and Indra came to the place. They worshipped it, installed it, called out "Vaidyanatha," bowed, praised it, and went back to heaven. Ravana returned home and told his wife all about the boon. The gods were uneasy. They said, "This Ravana hates the gods. With Shiva's boon he will bring us grief. Where can we go?" They called for Narada and begged him for a plan. Narada said, "Put your sorrow aside. By Shiva's grace I will do the gods' work." He went to Ravana's house, was welcomed, and asked him to tell his story.

Ravana told it plainly. Austerity on Kailasa, then the grove, then the pit and fire. He had worshipped the clay linga with incense, song and dance, and cursed his own body in despair. He had cut nine heads, and at the tenth Shiva appeared, restored him and gave him strength. Narada hid a smile and said, "Do not trust what Shiva told you. He has lost his senses. Go back and try to lift Kailasa. If you can, your boon is real." Ravana believed him and went. He seized the mountain and everything on it tumbled. Girija laughed at Shiva, saying, "A good disciple, a good result." Shiva cursed Ravana: "Proud fool, your arms will soon lose their pride." Even so, Ravana conquered the world.

Suta then spoke of Nageshvara. A rakshasi named Daruka was made proud by a boon from Parvati. Her husband Daruka was stronger still. With many rakshasas he killed the good, wrecked sacrifices and ruined dharma. In the western sea he held a rich forest, sixteen yojanas wide, and Parvati had given Daruka that forest to enjoy. The people, crushed, went to the sage Aurva and said, "Give us shelter. No one else on earth can protect us. The rakshasas run when they see you." Aurva answered, "If the rakshasas kill living beings on earth, or if sacrifices are stopped, may those mighty rakshasas lose their lives." The gods heard this curse and marched to battle with every weapon. The rakshasas were terrified.

The rakshasas asked each other, "Where can we go? If we fight, we die. If we stay, we starve and eat each other." Daruka told them of her boon from Bhavani. "She told me: go to the forest wherever you wish. Take the forest to the water, and live there in peace." The rakshasas rejoiced and begged to go. Crying "Victory to the Goddess," Daruka lifted the whole forest, land and water together. It rose like a winged mountain and settled in the middle of the sea. They lived there without fear and never came to earth again, dreading Aurva's curse. But they seized the people on passing ships, carried them to the city, locked up some and killed others.

One day Daruka came out of the city and blocked the way, ready to torment people. Many ships arrived, crowded with travelers. The rakshasas seized them all, dragged the passengers to the city and chained them in the prison. Among them was a merchant named Supriya, a devotee of Shiva, who wore ashes and rudraksha and never ate without worshipping Shiva. In prison he still made his worship. He taught the others the mantra and the worship with a clay linga.

The prisoners worshipped as they had seen and heard. Some sat in meditation and worshipped in their minds. Others, who knew no rites, only repeated "Namah Shivaya" and thought of Shankara. Supriya worshipped Shiva in his mind, with the clay linga, and Shiva took in everything offered, though Supriya himself did not know it. Six months passed this way, without trouble. Suta then told the sages to listen carefully to what came next, in the story of the moon-crested Lord.
