The story · English
Suta said: Listen, sages, to a story that destroys sin, as I heard it from Vyasa and from my true teacher. Long ago there lived a famous sage named Gautama. His wife was Ahalya, a woman of great virtue. In the south stood a mountain called Brahma, and there Gautama practised austerity for ten thousand years. Then a drought came. For a hundred years no rain fell. Not a single wet leaf could be seen on the earth, so where could water be found to keep living things alive? Sages, people, cattle, birds and wild animals all left and scattered in the ten directions. Some brahmins stayed and passed the terrible time in breath control and meditation.
Gautama himself practised breath control for six months to win the favour of Varuna. Varuna came to give him a boon and said, "I am pleased. Ask, and I will give." Gautama asked for rain. Varuna answered, "How can I go against the order of the gods and do that? Ask for something else, for you are wise, and I will do it." Gautama, who lived for the good of others, replied, "Lord of the gods, if you are pleased, give me what I ask. You rule the waters, so give me water, imperishable, divine, and always bearing fruit." Varuna told him to dig a pit. Gautama dug one a hand deep, and Varuna filled it with divine water.
Varuna said, "Great sage, let this water never fail. Let it be a holy place, famous on earth by your name. Whatever is given here, offered in fire, practised in austerity, or done in worship of the gods, and every rite for the ancestors, will never be lost." Then, praised by the sage, he vanished. Gautama was content. Suta adds that the great see what is truly great, and that those who serve a lion's den gain pearls, while those who serve a jackal's gain bones. With that rare water Gautama performed his daily rites. He sowed rice, barley and wild grain for the offerings. Crops, trees, flowers and fruit appeared everywhere. Thousands of sages came, with animals and birds, and made homes there with their families and pupils. The forest became beautiful, and the drought brought no grief.
One day Gautama sent his pupils to fetch water, carrying their water-pots. At the water, the wives of the sages stopped them, saying, "We will draw first, and you may draw afterwards," and they scolded the boys. The pupils went back and told Ahalya. She comforted them, fetched the water herself, and gave it to Gautama, and this went on every day. The sages' wives, furious, went home and told their husbands a twisted version of it all. Hearing it, and driven by what was destined, the sages grew angry with Gautama. To ruin him they worshipped Ganesha with many offerings. Ganesha appeared, pleased, and said, "Ask your boon. What shall I do?" They said, "If you give a boon, let the sages drive Gautama out of his hermitage with insults."
Ganesha laughed and tried to teach them. "Listen. This is not right. To be angry with a man who has done no wrong brings only loss. Those who once helped you should not be repaid with pain. When pain is given, ruin follows." But they were bewildered, and said only, "You must do exactly this." Ganesha said, "A bad man never becomes good, nor a good man bad. When you suffered from hunger, Gautama gave you comfort. Now you give him pain. You are deluded by your wives and will not heed me. Choose another boon." They would not listen. So, with a calm mind, he said, "I will do what you ask. What follows will follow," and vanished. Gautama knew nothing of their malice.
In Gautama's field grew rice and barley. Ganesha became a frail cow and went there, trembling, and began eating the grain. Gautama arrived by chance. Kind as he was, he tried to drive her off with a clump of grass. At the touch of the grass the cow fell to the ground and died at once, before his eyes. The sages, who had been hiding, came out with their wives and cried, "What has Gautama done?" Stunned, he called Ahalya and said in anguish, "What has happened? Has the Lord become angry? What am I to do, where am I to go? The sin of killing a cow has come upon me." The brahmins scolded him, and their wives hurt Ahalya with harsh words.
The sages said, "We cannot bear to see your face. Go, go. Anyone who sees a cow-killer must bathe in his clothes. While you stay in this hermitage, the fire gods and our ancestors take nothing we offer. Take your household and leave at once, sinner." Then they pelted him with stones, and their pupils and sons joined in the abuse. Gautama said, "I am leaving. I will live elsewhere." He walked a krosa away and built a hermitage there with their leave. While the curse stood he had no right to any rite for gods, ancestors or the Veda. After half a month he begged the sages to say how his sin could be removed. They told him to walk around the whole earth three times, then keep a month's vow, or to circle Brahma mountain a hundred and one times.
They gave another way too: bring Ganga and bathe, make ten million clay lingas and worship Shiva, then bathe in Ganga; or bathe with a hundred pots. Gautama said, "I will do it as you command," and did the circling of the mountain and the clay worship. Ahalya did it all with him, and their pupils served them. Then Shiva appeared with his attendants and said, "Ask a boon." Gautama praised him and said, "Make me free of sin." Shiva answered, "You are blessed and always sinless. These wicked men deceived you. The people who troubled you are the guilty ones, and they have no atonement." Gautama replied, "By their cruelty I saw you. They did me great good." Shiva was moved and said, "Choose a boon."
Gautama said, "Lord, give me Ganga, for the good of the world." Shiva took the essence of earth and heaven, kept safe from before, and the portion Brahma had given at his wedding, and gave it to him. It became a woman, Ganga. Gautama praised her and said, "Purify me." Shiva too ordered it. Ganga answered that she would cleanse the sage and his family and then go home. Shiva told her to stay until the Kali age, the twenty-eighth. She said she would stay if she were greater than all, and if Shiva stayed beside her. Shiva agreed. The gods came, with Hari and Brahma, and asked her to stay. She said she would stay when Jupiter stood in Leo, and they promised to come then to wash away the world's sins. Ganga became Gautami, and Shiva stayed as the Tryambaka linga.
Suta said: whoever sees the Tryambaka jyotirlinga with devotion, worships and praises it, is freed from all sins. The sages asked how Ganga came as water, and what became of the wicked brahmins. Suta told them she flowed from Brahma mountain and from a fig branch. When the jealous sages came to bathe, she vanished. Gautama begged her. A voice from the sky called them ungrateful and unfit to see her. Gautama said, "Doing good to those who harm you is the Lord's word." The voice told them to circle the mountain a hundred and one times. They did, and begged pardon. Gautama made Kusavarta, and Ganga returned there. In another telling, Gautama cursed them to turn from Shiva, clay on their brows, and they went to Kanci. Suta ends: next comes Vaidyanatha.
