The sages asked Suta to tell them of the Mother of the world, Uma, the first and eternal power of the Supreme Lord. They had heard of her two births, as Sati and as Hemavati, and wanted more. Suta said they were blessed to ask. Those who do not praise the Goddess wander in her illusion and fall into the dark well of worldly life, like a man who leaves the Ganges to drink from a desert mirage. Then he told what the sage Medhas once told King Suratha. In the age of Svarocisha there was a king named Viratha. His son Suratha was strong, truthful, generous, a devotee of the Goddess, and a protector of his people. Nine rival kings came to take his lands and besieged his capital, Kola.
The war was terrible, and Suratha lost it. He was driven out of Kola and his kingdom was taken. He went back to his own city to rule with his ministers, but they had turned against him by fate, and they took even the treasury. So under the pretext of a hunt he rode alone into a deep forest. There he found the hermitage of a great sage, bright with flowers and filled with the sound of the Veda. Tigers and other fierce beasts did not harm anyone there. The sage honored him with food, a seat and kind words, and Suratha stayed. One day grief overcame him. He thought of his lost kingdom, his faithful ministers, and his horses and elephants now serving another lord. Then a merchant arrived, and the king asked why he looked so sad.
The merchant wept as he answered. His name was Samadhi, born into a wealthy family. His sons and wife had cast him out for his money, and he had come to the forest in sorrow. Yet he could not stop wondering whether they were well. The king said, "They threw you out in greed. Why do you still love them, like a foolish animal?" Samadhi said, "You speak well, king. But the cord of affection still holds my mind." Both men were confused. They went together to the sage Medhas and bowed. Suratha folded his hands and said, "Sir, cut through our confusion. I lost my kingdom, yet my heart is not at peace. He was thrown out by his family, yet he still clings to them. Why?"
Medhas answered that the Great Illusion, Mahamaya, the eternal power who holds the world, pulls every mind and binds it. Even Brahma and the gods are deluded by her and cannot know the highest truth. She creates, protects and destroys. Only the one she favors passes beyond delusion. Suratha asked who she was and how she was born. Medhas told him. When the world was one ocean, Vishnu lay asleep on the serpent Sesha in yogic sleep. From the wax of his ear two demons were born, Madhu and Kaitabha, huge, with blazing eyes like the fire at the world's end and mouths full of fangs. They saw Brahma seated on the lotus from Vishnu's navel and rushed to kill him, shouting, "Who are you?" Brahma saw Vishnu sleeping and began to praise the Goddess.
Brahma prayed, "Save me, Mahamaya, from these two terrible demons. You are Yoganidra, Uma, Sati, Kalaratri, the mother of the three gods. By your power I create, Vishnu protects and Shiva destroys. You are Svaha, Svadha, intelligence, mercy, memory, and the mother in every home. Bewilder these two demons, and wake Narayana." The Goddess came forth from Vishnu's eyes and mouth as Mahakali, on the twelfth day of the bright half of Phalguna. A voice from the sky said, "Do not be afraid, Brahma. I will kill them." Vishnu woke and fought the two demons in hand-to-hand combat for five thousand years. Deluded by Mahamaya, they said, "Ask us for a boon." Vishnu said, "Let both of you die by my hand." Seeing the world covered in water, they asked to be killed where the earth was dry. Vishnu said, "So be it," took up his bright discus, laid their heads on his thigh and cut them off. Medhas then said he would tell of the birth of Mahalakshmi. The Goddess, though without form, takes bodies in every age to end the gods' suffering, as her play.
