There was an asura named Rambha, the crown of the daityas' line. From him was born a son of great power, the danava Mahisha. He fought the gods and defeated every one of them. Then he sat on Indra's own seat and ruled the heavens as king of the danavas. The beaten gods went to Brahma for shelter. Brahma gathered them and led them to where Shiva and Vishnu were. There they bowed to Shankara and Keshava and told the whole story in order. "Lord, the wicked Mahisha conquered us on the battlefield and drove us out of heaven. Now we wander the world of mortals and find peace nowhere."
They went on. "Every one of us has been brought low, Indra and all the rest. The sun and the moon, Varuna, Kubera and Yama, the gods of fire and wind, the gandharvas, vidyadharas and charanas. The work that belongs to each of them, this sinful asura now does himself. O terror of the daitya side, we have come to you for shelter. Protect us, and think quickly of a way to kill him." When Vishnu and Shiva heard this, they were filled with great anger, and their eyes rolled red with rage. From the faces of the two, and from the bodies of the other gods as well, a blazing light poured out, a mass of brightness burning in all ten directions. The gods watched it, meditating on Durga.
That terrible light, born from the bodies of all the gods, came together and became a woman. She was Mahishamardini herself, the destroyer of Mahisha. Her radiant face came from Shambhu's light. Her hair came from Yama, her arms from Vishnu, her breasts from the moon. Indra gave her waist, Varuna her thighs and legs, the earth her hips. Brahma made her two feet, and the sun her toes. Indra also gave the fingers of her hands, Kubera her nose, Prajapati her teeth. Fire gave her three eyes, the twilights her brows, the wind her ears. So she was formed from the light of the gods, the supreme goddess. The gods looked at her and were filled with joy. But she had no weapons, and they decided to arm her.
Shiva gave her a trident. Krishna gave a discus, Varuna a conch and noose. Fire gave a spear, the wind a bow, and Indra a quiver full of arrows, a thunderbolt and a bell. Yama gave the staff of death, Prajapati a rosary, Brahma a water pot, the sun his rays on her skin. Time gave a sword and a shining shield. The ocean of milk gave a necklace and clothes that never age, with jewels and ornaments. Vishwakarma gave an axe and an armor nothing could pierce. The sea gave a lotus garland. Himavan gave a lion and many jewels, Kubera a cup of wine, and Shesha a jeweled serpent necklace. Honored so, she roared and laughed again and again. The sky filled with the sound, the three worlds shook, the four oceans heaved and the earth trembled. The gods cried out in victory and praised her as Ambika, the supreme power, Mahalakshmi.
Mahisha heard the roar and rushed toward it in rage. He saw the goddess, her radiance filling the three worlds. His warriors came too, millions strong, among them Chikshura, Chamara, Udagra, Karala, Bidala and Andhaka. They fought her, and the days passed. Every weapon they threw was undone by her great power. She killed Chikshura and the rest with mace, arrows, trident, spear and axe. Mahisha attacked the beings born from her breath, striking with horns, tail and snout. He tore up mountains and hurled them, but she shattered them with arrows. She bound him with her noose. He changed into a lion, then a swordsman, then an elephant. She cut off his trunk. She drank wine again and again and laughed, her eyes rolling. Flushed with the wine, she shouted, "Fool, why this useless stubbornness? No asura in the three worlds can stand before me." She leapt, set her foot on his neck and pierced him with her trident. Half out of his own mouth, he fought on, until she struck off his head. His followers fled, and the gods praised her while the gandharvas sang.
