The story · English

The sage tells it this way. There were two daemon brothers, Shumbha and Nishumbha, mighty and proud. By their strength they took the three worlds and everything that moves or stands still in them. The gods, crushed by the two of them, came to the Himalaya and bowed to the mother of all beings, the giver of what is asked. They praised her: victory to Durga, great queen, who protects the three worlds. Bow to her who gives liberation, who creates, sustains and ends the whole world. Bow to Kalika, to Chinnamasta, to Bhuvaneshi, Bagalamukhi, Dhumavati, Tripurasundari, Matangi. Bow to Rudrani, who shelters all who come to her, and to the mistress of endless millions of worlds.

Gauri was pleased by their praise. Kind and ready to give boons, she asked the gods, who is it you are praising here? Then a young girl came out of Gauri's own body. In front of them all she answered the great power with deep respect: this hymn is sung to you, mother, by all the dwellers of heaven, tormented by the strong Nishumbha and Shumbha. Because she came out of the sheath of that body, she is called Kaushiki, the one who destroys Shumbha. She is also called Ugrataraka and Mahograataraka, and Matangi on earth. She told the gods, stay without fear, I will do your work, and I need no help. Then she vanished at once.

Chanda and Munda, servants of the two brothers, saw the goddess. Her beauty was so lovely and so pleasing to the eye that they fell senseless to the ground, bewildered. They went back and told their king everything. A woman, they said, sits on a lovely peak of the Himalaya, riding a lion. Heavenly maidens with folded hands wait on her. One rubs her feet, one dresses her hair, one paints her eyes, one holds up a mirror, one offers betel leaf with cloves and cardamom. She has three eyes, eight raised arms holding fine weapons, a half moon on her brow, a body bright as lightning. No woman in the three worlds compares. She is the jewel among women, and you, lord, are the jewel among men.

Shumbha sent a messenger named Sugriva. Go to the snow mountain, he said, and bring her, using my words. Sugriva told the goddess: Shumbha has beaten Indra and the gods in battle and taken their treasures. He eats the share the gods are given at sacrifice. He thinks you the finest jewel of all, so come to him or to his brother. She answered: you speak truly, but I once made a vow. Whoever breaks my pride, whoever defeats me in battle, only he will I take as husband. Let Shumbha act as he sees fit. Sugriva reported this. Shumbha, in anger, sent his commander Dhumraksha with thousands of daemons: if she will not come, fight her. Dhumraksha threatened her. She said she could not go without a battle. He rushed at her, and with one roar of hum she burned him to ash. From then she is called Dhumavati on earth. Her lion devoured his host, and a few fled.

Shumbha heard, bit his lips and burned with rage. He sent Chanda, Munda and Raktabija in turn. They came to Ambika, seated on her lion, lighting the quarters with her glow. They said: go to Shumbha and Nishumbha at once, or we will kill you with your lion and attendants. Choose the lord the world guardians praise. She smiled and said: Sadashiva alone is without a second, the highest Brahman, whom even the Vedas do not know. I am his Prakriti. How could I take another husband? A lioness never chooses a jackal. Go down to the underworld, or fight if you have strength. The daemons, thinking her frail, hesitated, then arrows rained from both sides. In play, the supreme goddess killed the great daemon Raktabija with Chanda and Munda. Though they had hated her, they reached the highest world, the one her devotees reach.
