The story · English

The king asked the sage a question. Dhumraksha was dead, and Chanda and Munda, and the demon Raktabija, all killed by the Goddess. When Shumbha, the tormentor of the gods, heard this, what did he do? The king said he wished to hear the story of the Lord of the world, which destroys sin. The sage answered. The great demon heard that his best fighters were dead, and he called together his fearsome followers, the ones who grow glad at the very word battle. He told them to gather in strength, by his order, with the Kalaka clan and the Mauryas and the rest, and march quickly. Then Nishumbha and Shumbha mounted their chariots and set out, and the armies rose behind them like swarms of locusts.

Drums, kettledrums and cymbals sounded, and the soldiers who loved fighting rejoiced on the field. Elephants, horses and chariots came on, carrying demons in their crores, so thick they could not tell friend from foe. The din of the war-engines shook the gods, and the sky grew so dark that the sun's wheel could not be seen. Mad elephants trumpeted like black mountains, and camels groaned, and horses neighed. Seeing the enemy host rush upon her, Ambika strung her bow. She rang her bell, which brings ruin on enemies, and her lion shook his mane and roared. Then Nishumbha looked at Shiva standing on the snowy mountain, bright with ornaments and weapons, and spoke sweetly, like a man skilled in love. A body as lovely as yours, he said, is hurt by a fallen jasmine petal. How will you wage this dreadful war, great goddess, with that same tender form?

Having said this, the great demon fell silent. Chandika answered him. Why talk nonsense, you fool? Fight, or else go to the realm of the Nagas. Nishumbha, enraged, rained a wonderful flood of arrows, like clouds in the monsoon. He fought with arrows, spears, axes, clubs, nooses, maces, bows, bhusundis, prasas, razors and great swords. Great elephants reeled with split foreheads, and the banners of Shumbha and Nishumbha were torn down. Demons lay cut apart like fish. Kalika and the lion killed many, and others she devoured. Blood ran as rivers, with the hair of the dead like water-weed and their cloths like white foam. Rider fell on rider, chariot-fighter on chariot-fighter, foot soldier on foot soldier. Then Nishumbha thought: a fearful time has come. A beggar may become rich, and a rich man poor, when the hour turns. The strong are beaten and the weak win. Victory or defeat comes by the will of the Supreme Lord. Even Maheshvara, Brahma and Vishnu cannot outlive their time.

Running from a battle, he thought, is not what good warriors approve. Yet how could he win, when she had destroyed his whole army? She surely came to serve the gods and crush the demons. She is the ancient, supreme Shiva, Prakriti, and never an ordinary woman. Being killed by a woman is a shame, the lovers of battle say. Still, how could he show his face to the demon king without fighting? So he mounted his great chariot and drove to the Goddess. He asked why soldiers who live on wages should die, and said that if she wished to fight, let the two of them fight. Kausiki said to Kali, look at their stubbornness. Time bends the mind of those whose end is near. Nishumbha shot thousands of arrows at Chandika and at Kalika. Shiva split them into a thousand pieces. He struck her lion's head with sword and shield, and Ambika broke the sword as an axe cuts a tree. His spear and trident she crushed with her fist. He rushed her with a mace, and she shattered it. Then she struck Nishumbha down with arrows like terrible serpents.

Shumbha, filled with rage at his younger brother's fall, rode out in his chariot, ringed by eight arms. He blew his conch and made his bow ring terribly. The lion roared, and the sky was filled with three sounds. Jagadambika laughed loudly, and the enemies of the gods trembled. The gods cried out victory when Ambika said, stand firm in battle. The demon king hurled a great blazing spear, and she struck it down with a firebrand. She cut his arrows into a thousand pieces. Chandika threw her trident and hit him, and he fell senseless, shaking sky, earth and ocean like a mountain with its wings cut by Indra. He rose, bore the pain, and with ten thousand arms struck Kalika and the Goddess's lion with discs. She broke them in play and killed him with her trident. Both brothers died at her pure hand and reached the highest state. The remaining demons fled into Bali's house, some were eaten by Kali and the lion, and others ran to the ten directions. Rivers ran clear, the winds blew gently, and the sky grew clean. The gods and sages began their sacrifice again, and Mahendra and all the dwellers of heaven were happy. The sage said that whoever hears this account with faith will enjoy all pleasures here and go to Uma's realm. So the Goddess was born, the destroyer of Shumbha, said to be Sarasvati herself.
