The sages asked Suta to tell them how Uma, the Goddess of the worlds, took form, the same Uma from whom Sarasvati was born. They called her the supreme Brahman and the root of nature, formless and yet with form, eternal and made of bliss. Suta told them to listen with love, for anyone who understands this story reaches the highest state. Once the gods and the demons went to war against each other. By the power of the great Goddess, the gods won. Then they grew proud and began to praise themselves. "We are blessed," they said. "We are blessed. What can the demons do to us?" They said the demons had seen their unbearable power and fled in fear to the underworld, crying that they must run.
"What strength," the gods went on, "what brilliance, to wipe out the line of the demons. How fortunate we are." They all spoke this way together. Then a blaze of light appeared before them, something none of them had ever seen. The gods stared in wonder. Their throats tightened, and they asked one another, "What is this? What is this?" They did not know that this was the power of the Goddess, who breaks pride. Indra, the lord of the gods, gave an order. "Go and find out properly what it is." He sent Vayu, the wind, who went up to the light. The light asked him, "Who are you?"
Vayu answered with pride. "I am Vayu, the life breath of the world. Everything that moves and everything that is still is threaded on me. I am the support of all things, and I move the whole world." The great light replied, "If you really have the power to move things, here is a blade of grass. Move it, as you please." Vayu put everything he had into the attempt. The grass did not shift from its place. Ashamed, he went back to Indra's assembly in silence and told what had happened to him. "We all claim to be lords of everything, and it is a lie. We cannot do the smallest thing, even to a worthless blade of grass."
Indra then sent the other gods, one after another. None of them could learn what the light was, so Indra went himself. As he drew near, the light, unbearable to look at, vanished at once, and Indra was left astonished. Again and again he thought, "I take refuge in the one whose deeds are like this." At that moment, out of pure compassion, the wife of Shiva came to show the gods her mercy and to take away their pride. It was the ninth day of the bright half of the month of Caitra, with the sun at midday. Uma appeared, her nature being being, awareness and bliss, shining in the middle of the light and lighting every direction. She made it plain to the gods that she is Brahman itself.
She had four hands, holding a boon, a noose, a goad and the sign that says fear not. The Vedas served her. She was lovely and proud in new youth, dressed in red, wearing red garlands and red paste, bright as ten million moons and as beautiful as ten million gods of love. She spoke. "Neither Brahma, nor the enemy of the gods, nor Shiva himself has any cause for pride before me. I am the supreme Brahman and the supreme light. Nothing exists apart from me. Sometimes I take a woman's form, sometimes a man's, sometimes both. Brahma creates, Vishnu protects and Rudra destroys, all by my power. I make every creature dance, as a magician makes a wooden doll dance. The wind blows and fire burns in fear of me. I give victory sometimes to the gods and sometimes to the demons, as I choose. So give up your pride and worship me with love." The gods bowed and praised her. "Forgive us, Mother. Do not let pride come to us again." From then on they worshipped Uma as before, according to the rites. Suta said that whoever hears this story reaches the highest state.
