The sages said to Suta, "We never tire of hearing the deeds of Durga. Tell us more, you who know the truth of things. Your words are like nectar, and our minds are not yet satisfied." Suta began. There was an asura named Durgama, the powerful son of Ruru. By a boon from Brahma he won the four Vedas, and he gained a strength the gods could not overcome. Then he began to cause terrible disturbances, and even the heavens trembled. When the Vedas were lost, all sacred action was lost with them. The brahmins fell into wrong living, as if they had become asuras. There was no giving, no hard austerity, no sacrifice, no offering into the fire.

Then rain stopped falling on the earth, and the drought lasted a hundred years. A great cry of grief rose in all three worlds. People were tormented by hunger and thirst. Rivers, seas, wells and ponds ran dry, and trees and creepers withered. Seeing the suffering of the helpless people, the gods took refuge in Yogamaya, the great Goddess. They said, "Protect us, Mahamaya. Protect all your people. Put away your anger, or the worlds will perish. You destroyed Shumbha and Nishumbha, Dhumraksha, Chanda and Munda, Raktabija, Madhu and Kaitabha, and Mahishasura. Now destroy this one quickly. Children offend at every step, and who but a mother will bear it? Whenever trouble came to the gods, you came down and made people happy."

Hearing their distress, the compassionate Goddess showed a form covered with endless eyes. In four hands she held a bow, arrows, a lotus, and many roots and fruits, and her lotus face was gentle. She looked on her suffering people with eyes full of mercy, and she wept. For nine days and nine nights she wept, and from her eyes streams of water fell by the thousand. The worlds and all the herbs were soothed by it. The rivers filled to great depth, and so did the seas. Greens, roots and fruits grew again on the earth. She gave out the fruits in her hands to the gods, sweet grass to the cattle, and food to others as each needed. Then everyone was content. She asked the gods, "What else shall I do for you?"

The gods gathered and said, "You have satisfied the people. Now be kind and give back the Vedas that Durgama took." She said, "So be it. Go to your homes. I will return the Vedas to you before long." The gods bowed to her, the mother of the world with eyes like open blue lotuses, and went home glad. Then a great uproar rose in heaven, on earth and in the sky. Hearing it, Ruru's son at once surrounded the city on every side. For the gods' protection, Shiva made a wheel of light around them and went out beyond it herself. Battle began between the Goddess and the asura, and both sides rained sharp arrows. Then from her body came radiant forms: Kali, Tara, Chinnamasta, Srividya, Bhuvanesvari, Bhairavi, Bagala, Dhumavati, Tripurasundari and Matangi, the ten Mahavidyas, each armed. Countless Mothers appeared too, each wearing a crescent moon and shining like lightning.

A terrible battle followed between the Mothers and the asura army. They destroyed a hundred akshauhinis of Durgama's forces. Then the Goddess struck Durgama himself with the point of her trident, and he fell to the ground like a tree torn up by the roots. Having killed the asura Durgama, she took the four Vedas and gave them back to the gods. The gods said, "For our sake you took a form of endless eyes, so the sages will call you Shatakshi. Because you fed the world with greens from your own body, your name will be Shakambhari. Because you killed Durgama, people will call you Durga." They praised her, saying, "You are the mother of the world." The Goddess replied, "As cows run to their calves, I run to you. When Shumbha and Nishumbha come again, I will be born to Nanda's wife Yasoda in Gokula and be called Nandaja. I will take the form of a bee to kill the asura Aruna and be called Bhramari. In a terrible form I will eat the rakshasas and be called Bhima. Whenever asuras trouble the earth, I will come down and bring peace. Shatakshi, Shakambhari and Durga are one."
