Heaven Sings and Dances

Meaning · English
Then all the hosts of gods, their minds filled with joy, saw him slain. The gandharvas sang sweetly. Others played instruments, and the troops of apsaras danced. Holy winds began to blow, and the sun shone with a clear and brilliant light.
The sage Medhas tells King Suratha and the merchant Samadhi what followed the death of the demon. Four words carry the scene. Harsha is joy, a lifting of the heart. The gandharvas are the singers of the heavens, and the apsaras are its dancers. Punya, said of the winds, means pure or auspicious, so these are clean, good-omened breezes. Medhas takes the clauses in order. First the gods themselves, all of them, are glad in mind. Their gladness comes only after the enemy has fallen, which tells us how heavily he had weighed on them. Then the heavenly artists do what they do. The gandharvas sing a sweet song, others play instruments, and the apsaras dance. Last, the winds blow pure and the sun grows bright. Nature joins the gods in the rejoicing. Medhas tells this to two men who have lost a kingdom and a home. It answers a question they carry without asking it: what comes after the trouble is ended by the Goddess? He answers that gladness comes, and that it is full, with music, dance, fresh air and light. The text asks nothing of the listener here. It lets the two men see the relief of those who were freed.
A power cut has lasted all evening in a crowded lane. When the current returns, the lights flick on, a radio starts somewhere, and neighbours step out of their doors talking. The long fear gives way to ordinary gladness, and everyone shows it at once.
