Meaning · English
Then, when that evil-souled one was slain, everything grew clear and glad. The world came into full health, and the sky became spotless. The clouds of ill omen, with their falling meteors, that had gathered before, were stilled. The rivers, once he was struck down, flowed again along their proper courses.
Four words carry this. Prasanna means clear and settled, glad in the way a face is when worry leaves it. Svasthya is health, from sva, one's own, and stha, to stand: standing in one's own place. Utpata is an omen of disaster, a sign that things have slipped out of their order. Nirmala means stainless, nir plus mala, the dirt taken away. Medhas tells the dispossessed king and the outcast merchant what followed Shumbha's death. Shumbha is called durathma, of bad soul, and when he falls the whole world turns clear. The first lines say that creation regains its health and the sky is without a stain. The next lines say that the stormy clouds and meteors, which had warned of trouble, go quiet, and that the rivers flow in their own channels again. The text treats his rule as a disorder that reached the weather and the waters, and his fall as the return of order. This answers the worry of the two listeners. One has lost a kingdom and the other a family, and both wonder whether the Goddess's fighting is only violence. Medhas answers by pointing to the result: the world set right, the sky open, the rivers in their beds. The listener is asked to measure the battle by this calm and not by the killing.
A machine in the next room has rattled all day, and you stopped hearing it long ago. When someone finally switches it off, the quiet is sudden. You notice birdsong and light on the wall. The calm after Shumbha is like that: the world was strained and is now simply itself.
