Meaning · English

Thrown down to the earth, he swiftly raised his fist and ran at her again, the wicked-souled one, bent on ending Chandika. As he came on, the lord of all the daitya people, the Goddess pierced his chest with her trident and flung him to the ground. Struck by the point of the Devi's trident, his life gone, he fell upon the earth. As he fell he shook the whole world, with its seas, its islands and its mountains.

Three words carry the passage. Duṣṭātmā means wicked-souled: duṣṭa is spoiled or corrupted, ātman is the self, so his very self has gone bad. Caṇḍikā, the Goddess's name here, comes from caṇḍa, fierce. Gatāsu means one whose breath has gone: asu is the life-breath, gata is gone. The clauses run in order. Shumbha has just been hurled to the ground, and he does not stop. He gets up, lifts his fist and charges, wanting only to end her. The text calls him lord of all the daitya people, so everything he commands rests on this one charge. She does not dodge or argue. She drives her trident through his chest and throws him down. He lies lifeless, and his fall shakes the earth, its seas, islands and mountains. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom, and Samadhi, a merchant thrown out by his family. Both are still gripped by what they lost. The passage shows how large a power can look, a lord of many, and how plainly it ends when it meets the Goddess. The size of the fall also matches the size of the rule. The commentators read the Goddess's victory as the Mother's act, not a mere fight. The listeners are asked only to hear it and to see what the Goddess does with what is ruinous.

A great old tree, thick and tall, is cut at the base and falls. The ground jumps under your feet a field away, and every bird in the valley lifts at once. Shumbha is the tree: how far his fall is felt shows how much stood on him.
