The Self That Remains
Ashtavakra Gita 2.11
Meaning · English
How wonderful I am. I bow to myself, for whom there is no destruction. From Brahma, the creator, down to the last blade of grass, even when the whole world perishes, I remain standing.
Three words carry the verse. Aho is a cry of wonder, the sound a person makes at something astonishing. Namo is a bow, from nam, to bend. Vinasha is destruction, from nash, to be lost: a thing coming apart until it is gone. A fourth, tishthatah, means 'of one who stands', from stha, to stand. Janaka cries out in wonder and bows to himself. The self he bows to has no vinasha. Nothing in it can be lost, broken or used up. Then he gives the reach of it. Brahma, the creator, stands at the top of every ladder of beings. A blade of grass stands at the bottom. Between them lies everything that lives. Even when that whole world is destroyed, the one who stands is still standing. The 'I' here is not Janaka the king, with his body, his throne and his name. The Ashtavakra Gita teaches that the self is the witness in which bodies and worlds appear. Why say it now? Janaka had asked how freedom is won. Ashtavakra answered that the self is already free and needs only to be recognised. This is what recognising sounds like when it is spoken aloud: a bow to what cannot be lost. The text asks the listener to look and see whether the one who knows the world's ending is ended by it.
A cinema screen shows a burning city, a flood, a collapsing bridge. When the film ends, the screen is as clean as before. Nothing that played on it touched it. The self is the screen; the worlds, from Brahma to grass, are the pictures passing across it.
1. Today, spend two minutes on a clear memory from ten or more years ago: a classroom, a kitchen, a street. 2. Ask what was present then that is still present now. The body, the opinions and the work have all changed. Notice what was aware of them. 3. When something goes wrong later today, say quietly, 'this is happening in front of me,' and notice who is looking. 4. At bedtime, note once what stayed the same through the whole day.
A retired schoolteacher stands across the road while the walls of her old school come down. Forty years of mornings were spent inside them. Her chest tightens, and she feels the building falling as if it were her own life. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she sees that the grief is real and lets it stay. Then she notices that she is watching. The one who watches is the same one who once stood at the blackboard, and the same one who walked in as a young woman. The classrooms were what she saw, not what she was. When the bricks fall, the one who saw them has not fallen. Ordinary experience agrees a little: the memory of a place carries on after the place is gone. The verse does not promise she will feel no grief that day. It does not return the school, and it does not replace the company of friends or a doctor if the sadness grows heavy and will not lift.
