Meaning · English

Wonder. Homage to myself. I am one, though I wear a body. I go nowhere and I come from nowhere. Pervading the universe, I stand. Wonder. Homage to myself. No one here is as skilled as I, who, without touching it with the body, have held the world up for ages.

Janaka bows to himself twice, and the bow is the point. He means the one awareness he now knows himself to be, not the king. Three words carry the verse. Eka is one: a single presence, though a body is attached. Dakṣa is skilled, able, the word for a craftsman who gets a hard job done. Asaṃspṛśya is without touching, from sparśa, touch, with the negative in front. Dhṛta is held or borne, from dhṛ, to carry. The clauses go in order. He is one even while having a body, so the body does not make him many. He neither goes nor comes, because going and coming happen inside space and he is what space appears in, pervading everything. Then the second wonder: he is the most skilled there is. His skill is a strange one. He has held the whole world up for ages and never laid a hand, a body or a thought on it. Everything rests on him and none of it sticks to him. It is taught here because Ashtavakra has told him that the self is the witness, already free. Janaka tests that against his own experience and finds it holds. He asks nothing of the listener. He reports what waking up looks like from inside.

A cinema screen holds a storm, a battle and a burning house, one after another, for hours. It is never wet, never wounded, never scorched. Every scene needs it, and it touches none. The screen stands for the awareness Janaka names himself, and the scenes for the world held up on it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes near a window and quietly name what passes: a sound, a thought, an ache in the back. 2. Notice that each one came and went while the one noticing did not move. 3. Once tomorrow, in the middle of an ordinary task like washing a cup, notice the hands working and the knowing of it, side by side. 4. Say nothing about it to anyone. Just see whether the two feel different.

A grandmother stands on a crowded railway platform with a toddler on her hip, two bags at her feet and the train an hour late. Every part of her is pulled toward the clock, the child's restlessness, the shoving crowd. Janaka's words would change the moment in small steps. First she notices that all of this is being seen: the noise, the tired legs, the worry. Then she notices that the seeing has not been pushed about by any of it. Her hands still do their work, the child is still held, and the bag is still counted. The task goes on, but she is no longer the thing being shaken. The text teaches that this is the true position of everyone, and that holding the world needs no gripping. Ordinary experience confirms only this much: when we step back and watch a worry, it often loosens its pull a little. The verse does not promise the train will come sooner, that her legs will stop aching, or that a fever in the child would need less than a doctor.
