Nothing, Yet Everything
Ashtavakra Gita 2.14
Meaning · English
Wonder of wonders, I bow to myself. I have nothing at all. Or else everything is mine: whatever speech can name and mind can reach.
Janaka begins with a cry of wonder, and then bows. The word for bowing means to bend toward something worthy. Here he bends toward his own self. Then he says two things that look opposed. The first is that nothing at all belongs to him. The word he uses means anything whatever, so not even a small thing is left. The second is that all of it is his, and he defines all precisely: whatever lies within the range of speech and mind. That word for range is the ground where cattle graze, so it means everything that can wander into naming or thinking. The small word between the two claims, meaning 'or else', shows they are one fact seen from two sides. Ashtavakra has taught that the self is the witness. A witness holds no object, so it owns nothing. Yet every object, every word and every thought appears only in its sight, so nothing known lies outside it. This is why Janaka speaks it here: his joy is the answer to the question of how freedom is won. Nothing needs gaining, because nothing was ever lacking. The verse asks the listener to look at what he calls his own and see whether any of it clings to the one who sees.
A clean window pane has no landscape stuck to it. Nothing on it is its own. Yet the whole hillside, the trees and a passing cloud all show through it. The pane stands for the witness: it keeps nothing, and everything seen appears in it.
1. This evening, sit for five minutes with a pen and write what you call yours: your name, your job, your phone, your worries. 2. Read each item slowly and notice that you can see it, which means it is something looked at. 3. Then ask who is looking. Stay with that question for one minute without answering it. 4. Notice, without forcing anything, how little the looker seems to carry.
A woman is packing the flat she has lived in for thirty years, because she is moving into her daughter's home. Two suitcases will hold what goes with her. She picks up a brass lamp, a stack of letters, her husband's reading glasses. Each object feels like a piece of her. The text teaches that the self owns nothing, since it is the witness, and that all that is known appears in it. Taken slowly, the lamp goes into a box for her niece, and the evenings by that lamp stay where they were, in her. She chooses what to carry with less panic, because the keeping was never done by the objects. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: memories often outlast the things that held them. The verse does not take the sorrow out of leaving a home. It does not settle money, health or where she will live. Those still need a daughter's help, a doctor, and plain planning.
