Meaning · English

Always think of me. Be my devotee, my worshipper. Offer obeisance to me. United with me in this way, with your mind and body dedicated to me as your highest aim, you will certainly come to me.

Krishna gives four short instructions and one result. The first is about the mind, manas: let it rest on him. Bhakta comes from bhaj, to share in or take part, so a devotee is someone who takes part in what he loves, not an admirer at a distance. Yaji comes from yaj, to offer; the worshipper is one who gives something up as an offering. Then comes the bow, namas, the body and ego lowered. The last word, parayana, joins para, highest, and ayana, a going or resting place. To be parayana is to make him the final destination and not a stop on the way. Krishna tells Arjuna that someone who joins himself like this, mind and body given over, will come to him without fail. The reason lies in the two verses before. If people the world ranks low can reach the highest goal by taking refuge, and the learned and the royal can too, the road is open to all. Arjuna lives in a world Krishna calls transient and joyless, so he is handed the road in plain steps. Shankara reads the "me" as the supreme Self, one with the devotee's own inmost self. Ramanuja reads it as loving, unbroken remembrance of the Lord as a person. Madhva reads it as devotion that knows the Lord to be above the soul.

A houseplant on a windowsill slowly bends its whole stem toward the glass. Its leaves, its stalk and its direction of growth all lean the same way, with no effort that shows. Thought, work and bowing, in Krishna's words, are meant to lean toward him like that, until the leaning is the plant's whole shape.

1. Choose one ordinary daily act, such as boiling water, washing a cup or walking to the bus stop. 2. For that act, for one week, silently say one short name or word for God before you start. 3. Let your hands do the act as a small offering, and give it your full attention for those few minutes. 4. At day's end, note whether your mind came back to that word more easily than on the first day.

A man sits on the late train home with a layoff notice in his bag. His thumb scrolls through nothing, and his mind runs the same loop of rent, shame and what to tell his wife. Krishna's four steps would reach him in that seat. First, the loop is given something else to rest on: a name, a remembered face of God, a line he knows by heart. Second, the quiet act of bowing, even only inwardly, puts the weight of the day down for a moment and admits he is not the only one holding it. Third, the journey home becomes an offering, not just a commute. The text teaches that this turning, repeated, brings a person to Krishna himself. Ordinary experience confirms only a small part of this: what the mind dwells on colours the whole evening. The verse does not promise that the job returns, that the fear lifts by the next stop, or that practical help and a hard conversation at home can be skipped.
