A Friend Speaks Again

Bhagavad Gita 10.1

Meaning · English

The Blessed Lord said: Mighty-armed one, hear once more my divine teaching. Because you are my beloved confidant, I will tell it to you, desiring your welfare.

Krishna opens the chapter by saying why he is speaking. Three words carry it. Bhuyah means again: more is coming, and it is something Arjuna has heard in part before. Paramam means highest or supreme, so the teaching is called a divine one, not an ordinary piece of advice. Hita-kamya is made of hita, welfare or real good, and kamya, wishing: he speaks wishing Arjuna's good. The plain sense is that Krishna tells his friend to listen again, because he is about to say something more, and that his reason is care for Arjuna. He does not say it to impress him or to win an argument. Arjuna is called priyamana, one who is dear, a beloved confidant, and that closeness is the reason Krishna goes on. The call to hear also asks Arjuna to give full attention, as one does to a friend who has something weighty to say. Shankara reads the 'again' as a fresh and fuller telling of the Lord's glories. Ramanuja stresses that Krishna speaks out of love for a devotee, to deepen Arjuna's devotion. Madhva stresses that the teaching is supreme because it concerns the Lord's greatness, and that Arjuna's welfare lies in knowing it.

A friend has already shown you the road. As you near the hardest turn, they call again, not to scold, but because they want you to arrive. Krishna's repeated word is that second call, given by someone who stays on the road with you.

1. Pick one person today who has given you good advice before, and think of the last thing they told you. Take two minutes with it. 2. When someone says something to you today, ask yourself what they want for you in saying it. Do this once, in one conversation. 3. Before a talk with someone dear, decide to say what you say for their good alone. Notice whether your tone changes.

A father stands on a railway platform at night, minutes before his daughter's train takes her to a hostel in another city. He has already given her every piece of advice at home. Now he wants to say one more thing, and he feels foolish, afraid it will sound like nagging. The verse shows what he can do. He can start with the plain fact of why he speaks: he wants her to be well. He can say the one thing, say it briefly, and let her hear it as care. He does not need to repeat the whole lecture. Ordinary experience bears this out: people listen more closely to someone they know wishes them well. Krishna's own words follow that order, naming the friendship and the wish for welfare before the teaching. The limit is plain. A kind word on a platform does not make the journey safe, ease her homesickness, or settle his own worry as the train pulls out.
