The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 10 · The Source of All
Even Gods Cannot Trace Him
Bhagavad Gita 10.2
Meaning · English
Neither the hosts of gods nor the great sages know my origin. For I am the source of the gods and of the great seers, in every way.
Krishna makes two claims, and the second explains the first. Prabhava is the origin, the place something rises from. Adi is the source, the starting point behind all that follows. The gods (sura-gana) and the great sages (maharshis) are the highest beings the tradition knows, the ones people look to for knowledge. Krishna tells Arjuna that even they do not know where he comes from. The reason he gives is simple: he is the source of them all, in every way. Something that comes later cannot see back past its own beginning to the one who made it. A pot cannot inspect the potter's hands. Krishna says this to a friend who has just asked to hear more, so that Arjuna hears the next teaching knowing how large the speaker is, and that it cannot be reached by cleverness or rank. Shankara reads the origin as Ishvara's nature beyond what any created mind can grasp. Ramanuja reads it as God's will and glory, which beings know only as far as he reveals them. Madhva stresses that God is the cause of even the gods' knowledge and power. The verse asks the listener to hold knowledge of God humbly, as something received.
A river cannot walk upstream to the spring that feeds it. The stones, the bends and the valley all come after the spring. The gods and sages are the river, wide and well known. Krishna is the spring they cannot get behind, because every step they take starts from him.
1. Tonight, choose one thing you depend on and cannot fully explain, such as the food on your plate or the light in your room. 2. Spend two minutes tracing it back as far as you can: who grew it, carried it, made it. 3. Notice where your knowledge runs out, and stay with that edge for a moment without filling it in. 4. Say quietly, once, that you do not know everything about where you come from.
A grandmother sits in a hospital corridor at night while her grandson is in surgery. The doctors have explained the procedure carefully, and she has understood what she can. Still, she keeps asking how it will go, as though enough questions could hand her control. The verse speaks to that moment. Krishna tells Arjuna that even the gods and great sages do not know his origin. If the wisest do not hold everything, she need not be ashamed of not holding it either. Step by step: she lets the doctors' knowledge be theirs, she stops treating her own ignorance as a failure, and she turns from questions to presence, sitting calmly with her family. Ordinary experience confirms that people who admit the limits of what they know often listen better and panic less. The verse does not promise the surgery will go well. It does not replace the surgeon, and it does not remove her fear. It only says that not knowing the whole is the condition of every being, however learned.
