Knowing the Unborn

Bhagavad Gita 10.3

Meaning · English

Whoever knows me as unborn and without beginning, the Supreme Lord of the universe, is undeluded among mortals and is freed from all evils.

Three words carry it. Aja means unborn: a being who does not arrive in the world the way a body does. Anadi means beginningless: without a first moment, so nothing came before him. Sammoha is bewilderment, a fog over the mind, and asammudha is its opposite, someone who sees clearly. Krishna tells Arjuna that the person who knows him as unborn, beginningless and the Supreme Lord of all worlds stands undeluded among mortals, people whose lives are bounded by birth and death. Such a person is freed from all papa, wrongs and the harm they bring. The reason follows from the verses before it. Even gods and sages cannot trace his origin, because he is the source of them. Confusion about who stands at the root of things is what the text treats as the real trouble, and clear knowing is what loosens it. Krishna asks Arjuna to know, not merely to admire. Shankara reads this knowing as insight that removes ignorance itself. Ramanuja reads it as knowledge joined with devotion to a personal Lord. Madhva stresses that the Lord is wholly distinct from, and greater than, all beings.

Picture a man in a dark house who keeps bumping into furniture and blaming each chair. Someone finds the light switch. The furniture was never the problem. Seeing the room as it is ends the bruises. Krishna's picture is the same: knowing the unborn Lord clears the fog, and the stumbling falls away.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes before sleep and name one thing in your life that feels like it began and will end, such as a job, a house or a season of life. 2. Then say quietly, in your own words, that behind all beginnings there is something without one. 3. Notice, without forcing anything, whether the worry about that one thing loosens even slightly. 4. Repeat for a week, choosing a different thing each night.

A man stands in a hospital corridor at night while his father is in surgery. His mind runs in circles: what if, why now, what did I miss. He keeps checking his phone, snaps at a nurse, then regrets it. Krishna's teaching speaks to this kind of fog. In the text's view, much of our wrongdoing and harm comes from not seeing clearly what is real and what passes. If the man holds, even for a minute, that everything he fears losing is bounded by birth and death, while the Lord is neither, the circling slows. He may breathe, apologise to the nurse, and wait with steadier hands. Ordinary experience confirms that panic narrows judgment and that a wider view calms the body enough to act kindly. The limit is plain: this knowing does not decide whether the surgery succeeds, does not take away grief if the worst comes, and does not replace the surgeon, the doctors or the company of family.
