Bhagavad Gita 10.4
Meaning · English
Intellect, knowledge, clarity of thought, forgiveness, truthfulness, control over the senses, control of the mind, joy and sorrow, birth and death, fear and certainly courage.
Krishna begins a list, and the list is mixed. Some items are what anyone would want. Buddhi is the intellect that discerns, from a root meaning to wake up. Asammoha is clarity, literally the absence of bewilderment. Dama is mastery of the senses, and shama is quiet in the mind. Forgiveness and truthfulness stand beside them. Then the list turns. Joy and sorrow, birth and death, fear and courage all sit in the same line. The pleasant and the painful are named together, as conditions that living beings pass through. Krishna has just said that neither gods nor great sages know his origin, and that he is the source of them all. The list shows how wide that source is. It includes the hard states as well as the admirable ones, and no condition of life is left outside it. For Arjuna, standing between two armies, the mention of fear matters. Fear is not set apart from what Krishna describes. The listener is asked to see the whole range of inner states as one field, not to hand the good ones to God and the rest to accident. Shankara reads these as states of beings that have the Lord as their single cause. Ramanuja reads them as varied qualities of souls, all held and ordered by God from within. Madhva stresses that God is their source while beings remain distinct from him and dependent on him.
A rose bush by a gate has one root. The same root sends sap into the soft flower and into the thorn beside it. Nobody calls the thorn a different plant. The list of virtues, joys, fears and deaths maps to that: one source behind the sweet and the sharp, with nothing growing from somewhere else.
1. Tonight, take five minutes with paper and draw a line down the middle. 2. On the left, write what steadied you today: a clear thought, a forgiven remark, a true word. On the right, write what shook you: a worry, a sorrow, a fear. 3. Read both columns once, slowly, as parts of one day. Notice whether the right side feels less like a failure when it sits beside the left. 4. Beside one fear, write a small act you did anyway, however minor.
A woman stands at the airport gate, about to board her first flight to a new country. Her hands are cold and her mind is listing everything that could go wrong. She has been taught that fear means she is unready. The verse puts fear in the same list as courage, clarity and self-command, so she has no need to prove she is fearless before she walks forward. Step by step: she names the fear plainly, a fast pulse and a tight chest. She keeps her senses from feeding it, and puts the phone away instead of reading worst-case stories. She lets the mind settle enough to remember why she is going. Then she boards, with the fear still present. Ordinary experience agrees that a tired, hungry person finds restraint harder, so she eats first. The limit is real. The verse does not take the fear away, and it does not replace help from a doctor if the dread becomes constant or overwhelming.
