Meaning · English
Nonviolence, evenness of mind, contentment, austerity, giving, fame and disgrace: these differing natures of living beings all arise from Me alone.
Krishna continues the list he began in the previous verse, naming more of the inner qualities that living beings carry. Three of the words need unpacking. Ahimsa is nonviolence: himsa is harm, and the a in front negates it, so it means not wishing or causing hurt. Samata is equilibrium: sama means even or level, so it is a mind that stays level in gain and loss. Tapas is penance or austerity; its root sense is heat, the heat of effort that disciplines the body and mind. The rest of the list is contentment, charity, fame and infamy. Krishna puts the pleasant and the painful on one line: being honored and being disgraced are named together with the virtues. Then comes the claim: all of these natures, pṛthag-vidhāḥ, differently arranged from one being to the next, come from Him alone. The reason is the chapter's purpose. Arjuna is being shown that nothing in the range of human character stands outside Krishna's source, so that he can know Him fully. Krishna asks Arjuna to see the whole spread, including what he admires and what he fears, as arising from one origin. The classical commentators differ little on the plain sense. Shankara reads it as the Lord being the cause of every state of being. Ramanujacharya stresses that these natures depend on Him while remaining distinct in each creature. Madhva stresses that the Lord is the source while individuals remain different from Him.
Picture one lamp lit in a house where a hundred different things catch its glow: a brass pot gleams, a wall turns gold, a cloth shows its red, a corner stays dim. The light is single, and what it falls on differs. Krishna says every quality in living beings is arranged differently, and every one traces back to Him.
1. Tonight, write down five qualities you noticed in people today, such as patience, stinginess, generosity or pride. Include one you disliked. 2. Beside each, write one sentence about how it showed up, without judging the person. 3. Pick one quality in yourself from the list and notice when it appeared today and what set it off. 4. Spend two minutes sitting quietly with the thought that all of these qualities, in you and in others, come from one source.
A man stands outside the hospital room where his father is being treated, and the doctor has just said the next day will tell. Within a few minutes he feels many things: a wish to be gentle with his sister, a flash of anger at a delayed report, a stubborn calm, the urge to give away something to a stranger in thanks. He judges the anger harshly and the calm proudly. Krishna's teaching, as the Gita presents it, would change the moment in steps. First, he sees that all these states are part of one human range and not a verdict on his worth. Second, he lets the gentle ones guide what he does next, such as speaking kindly to his sister. Third, he treats the anger as something to notice and not to feed. Ordinary experience confirms that naming a feeling often loosens its grip. The teaching does not promise that the father recovers, that fear leaves, or that grief will be lighter. It does not replace the doctors, who are the ones to ask about treatment.
