Minds Before Mankind

Bhagavad Gita 10.6

Meaning · English

The seven great sages, and likewise the four Manus before them, were born from me, born of my mind. From them came all these people who live in the world.

Krishna names the oldest ancestors of the world and says they came from him. Three terms carry the verse. Maharshi means a great sage, one who has seen deeply. Manu means a first father of humankind, a lawgiver from whom people trace their line. Manasa means born of the mind, so these figures were not made by hand or by ordinary birth. Krishna says they arose from his will and thought. Mad-bhava, being from me, points the same way: their nature comes from him. The plain sense is a family tree with a single root. Seven sages and four Manus stand at the top, and from them come all the people in the world. Krishna places himself above even the first ancestors. The reason he gives it follows from the verses before it. He has just said that every human quality comes from him, and now he says the same of every human line. The problem it answers is Arjuna's sense of being small and alone in a world that seems to have no source. The listener is asked to see his own ancestry, and everyone else's, as reaching back to one origin. Shankara reads the sages and Manus as the creator's mental offspring, and Ramanuja reads them as Krishna's own devoted creations. Madhva takes them as beings empowered by Krishna for the work of creation.

Picture a tall banyan tree. Hundreds of hanging roots and branches look like separate trees, but follow any one of them upward and it joins a single trunk. The sages and Manus are the great limbs, every person is a twig, and Krishna is the seed the whole tree grew from.

1. Tonight, ask an older relative one question about where your family came from, such as a village, a trade or a grandparent's name. Listen for five minutes. 2. Write down three names from the answer, however far back they go. 3. Before sleep, hold those names in mind for one minute and notice that you are one branch of a very long line. 4. This week, notice one stranger and remember that their line goes back just as far.

A grandmother sits at a wedding in a hired hall, watching four generations crowd into one photograph. She counts the faces and feels how many of them came from her one marriage. Krishna's teaching would change what she sees in that moment, step by step. She first sees the family as one line, not as separate people. Then she sees that her own line is one among many, each reaching back to the same beginnings, and Krishna tells Arjuna that the beginning is himself. Last, the children in the photograph stop being only hers and become part of something older and larger than her household. Ordinary experience confirms part of this: people feel steadier when they know where they come from, and feel kinder toward others when they notice what they share. The verse does not promise that the family will agree, that old quarrels will end, or that grief at the empty chairs will lessen. The sages and Manus are the text's own teaching about origins, and the text offers them as such. They remain the tradition's account of the world's beginning, held in faith.
