Knowing Glory Steadies Devotion
Bhagavad Gita 10.7
Meaning · English
Those who know in truth these glories of mine and this divine power become united with me through devotion that does not waver. Of this there is no doubt.
Three words carry the verse. Vibhuti means glory, the many ways Krishna's greatness shows in the world. Yoga here means his divine power, the strength behind those glories. Tattvatah means in truth, as it really is, not as a rumour or a pleasant idea. Krishna tells Arjuna that anyone who knows these glories and this power in that way becomes united with him through bhakti yoga, devotion that does not shake. Avikampa means without trembling, like a flame in a room with no draught. Krishna adds that there is no doubt about it. The reason follows from what he has been saying. He has just said that all natures and all beings come from him. Knowing that in truth gives the mind something solid to rest on, and devotion built on it is not blown about by good or bad days. The verse asks the listener to know before trusting, and to let the knowing settle into steadiness. Shankara reads the unwavering union as firm, right knowledge of the Lord's manifold being. Ramanuja reads it as bhakti yoga itself, grown out of knowing the Lord's lordship and his auspicious qualities. Madhva stresses knowing the Lord's supremacy over everything, which becomes the ground of devotion.
Someone who has walked a river from its first trickle in the hills down to the sea no longer wonders whether it is real or where it goes. Knowing the glories in truth works the same way: devotion rests on a path actually seen, so it stops shaking.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name three things you have actually seen that left you quietly amazed: a sunrise, a child learning to walk, a body healing. 2. Next to each, write one line on what you noticed in it that you cannot account for. 3. Tomorrow, when worry or doubt arrives, read the list once before doing anything else, and notice whether your mind steadies even slightly.
A woman sits beside her father's hospital bed at three in the morning. The monitor beeps, the corridor is empty, and she wonders whether her prayers have ever reached anywhere. Doubt rises with the fatigue. The verse would change the moment in small steps. Krishna does not ask her to push the doubt down by force. He points to knowing, so she might recall what she has actually met in her life: the way her father's hands once steadied her, the way a hard year ended, the sense of something larger running through all of it. Each memory is a reason she holds herself, not a borrowed belief. Trust that rests on what a person has really seen and understood tends to hold better than trust that has to be forced, and ordinary experience bears this out. She may find her prayer quieter and less frantic, and herself steadier in the chair. The limit is plain. Knowing the glories does not make her father well, does not take away her fear tonight, and does not replace the doctors whose work he needs.
