The Source of All

Bhagavad Gita 10.8

Meaning · English

I am the origin of all creation; from me everything proceeds. Having known this, the wise worship me, endowed with great faith and devotion.

Krishna makes two claims and then draws a conclusion from them. Take three words. Prabhava is origin, the place a thing rises from. Pravartate is proceeds, or sets rolling, so creation is not made once and left but keeps flowing from him. Bhava is the inner state, here faith and devotion together, a settled feeling of the heart. Budha, the wise one, is simply someone who has understood. The plain sense: Krishna tells Arjuna that he is where everything starts, and that everything which moves, lives or happens moves out of him. The reason he gives is that worship follows from knowing. A person who sees where everything comes from does not worship out of fear or bargaining, but because the seeing itself turns the heart toward its source. So the wise are not those who pray the most, but those who have understood and whose devotion carries real warmth. Shankara reads the speaker as the Supreme Lord, the one cause of the world, and the wise as those who worship with clear understanding. Ramanuja reads it as the Supreme Person, Narayana, with devotion as loving attachment to him. Madhva stresses that all else depends on the Lord, who alone is independent, and that worship rests on knowing this.

Stand at the head of a river where it comes out of a rock as a small spring. Every field, village and boat downstream is drinking from that one place. Krishna says he is that spring, everything that moves is the river, and the wise are the ones who have walked upstream and seen it.

1. Tonight at a meal, pick one food and trace it back in your mind: the plate, the shop, the farmer, the soil, the rain. Take about two minutes. 2. Say quietly, once, a word of thanks to whatever you feel that chain began from. 3. Tomorrow morning, before picking up your phone, look at one ordinary thing, a tree or a cup of water, and ask where it came from. Stay with that for one minute and notice how your mood settles.

A farmer's son stands at the edge of his father's field the morning after the first rain. He has spent weeks worrying about loans and the price of seed. The soil smells strong, and the first green is showing. Krishna's teaching would change that moment in small steps. He would notice the rain he did not make, the seed his grandfather saved, the soil that was here long before him. His worry would not vanish, but it would sit inside a larger picture, where he is one of many hands in something that was given to him. Gratitude of this kind comes easily once a person looks at where things come from, and ordinary experience confirms that it quiets the mind. The Gita's claim goes further: that all of this proceeds from Krishna, and that the wise worship him knowing it. The verse does not promise a good harvest, does not pay the loan, and does not replace the practical work of the season. It offers a way of standing in the field while doing that work.
