Friends Who Talk of Him
Bhagavad Gita 10.9
Meaning · English
With minds fixed on me and lives given over to me, they awaken one another, always speaking about me. In this they find contentment, and in this they take delight.
Three words carry the verse. Chitta is the mind, the part that gathers attention and holds it. Prana is the breath of life, so a life "gone to" Krishna is one whose very breathing leans toward him. Bodhayantah comes from a root meaning to wake up, so these people do not merely inform each other, they wake each other. Then two more words: tushyanti, being satisfied, and ramanti, taking delight, from a root that also means to play. Krishna tells Arjuna that those who have taken in what he said just before, that he is the origin of everything, do not keep this to themselves. Their attention and their lives rest on him, and it spills into conversation. They speak of him constantly, and each hearing rouses the other. The reason is in the result: the talking is not a duty, it feeds them. It brings contentment, the settled feeling of having enough, and also delight, the lighter feeling of enjoying something. Shankara reads the two as satisfaction of a need met and joy like that of loved ones together. Ramanuja stresses that the shared talk of God's qualities is itself the joy of such devotees. Madhva stresses that the knowing they pass on rests on God's supremacy and difference from the world.
A single coal pulled out of the fire goes grey within minutes. Pile several together in the grate and they glow for hours, each keeping the others hot. Hearts that hold the same love behave like that pile, and speaking of Krishna is the heat passing between them.
1. Choose one person you trust and tell them, today or this week, one thing you hold dear about God or what you revere. Say it in two or three sentences. 2. Then ask what they hold dear, and listen for a full minute without adding your own. 3. Afterwards, sit quietly for a minute and notice whether you feel lighter, more settled, or neither. Note it without judging. 4. If no one is near, say it aloud to yourself, or write it in a few lines.
Meera, a retired teacher, has spent the day lifting and feeding her husband after his stroke. At seven she nearly stays home. She goes anyway to a neighbour's living room, where four people meet each Thursday to speak of Krishna. She arrives with her mind still on medicines and the next meal. One neighbour tells of a line she read that morning. Meera says what she herself has been turning over, and finds she had not known she thought it until she spoke. Someone nods, adds a word, and her own thought grows clearer. By nine the day's weight has not gone, but her attention has a place to rest. Ordinary experience confirms that what we love grows brighter when it is spoken aloud to someone who cares for it too. The verse does not promise that this will cure her husband, shorten her days of caring, or remove her grief or fatigue. It also does not replace the doctors and helpers she needs. It says only that for those whose lives lean toward Krishna, such company is both a contentment and a delight.
